Climb every mountain… in the French Alps. Lunch in the French Alps. An enormous roquefort and walnut salad. Sadly no wine as I’m en route to Monte Carlo. It’s been a difficult couple of days, widow wise. When I’m not on the road I have time to think and time to miss. So I check in with friends, feel the love and pick myself up by my bra straps. Hmmm Yup. I really am going up the side of that mountain in a rickety carriage…. It was as rickety as it looks, but great fun! This region of France probably has ...

In the beginning was the end… – wanderingwidowblog

Category: In the beginning was the end…. This is a series of posts detailing the dark days of grief and rage following my husband’s death. It may be sad, often it is pithy as I cope with sorrow through making inappropriate jokes. It will definitely contain swear words and references to sex. Widows do swear and have sex, you know…. Sur le pont D’Avignon? Sur le Pont d’Avignon. L’on y danse, l’on y danse. Sur le Pont d’Avignon. L’on y danse tous en rond. Adele my delightful waitress…. I was beginning to us...

Marseille – The French Connection, The Count of Monte Cristo and “The meeting place of the entire world” (Alexandre Dumas). I had reservations about coming to Marseille to be honest. It seems to be a real mixed bag down here. There are some dodgy areas to be sure. I guess every large city has them whether they’re in the south of France or not. But I’d seen the French Connection, and heard about its ancient history and was curious. Gene Hackman in French Connection II, and some cute french cars…. When I&#...

Va, va, voom… once I’ve got the washing done. After the hair raising trip from Grenoble the previous day, I was somewhat reluctant to bother with the Ferrari trip that I had arranged. I’d had enough of cars and being on roads for a while. I wanted to lie down in a dark room and sleep. For a few days. It was to be at 12 noon. I could have done with a good lie in but, I’d booked and paid and by golly I was going to do it! I could sleep for the rest of the day afterwards. But still, it was cute…. His deligh...

Sur le pont D’Avignon? Sur le Pont d’Avignon. L’on y danse, l’on y danse. Sur le Pont d’Avignon. L’on y danse tous en rond. I wasn’t feeling in the mood for dancing, despite the beauty of le pont d’Avignon. So, after a great time in Marseille, I was flagging. I had driven 1500 miles, spent most of 15 days by myself, and lugged my rucksack, cold box and backpack up more stairs than I care to remember… and I was remembering many things…. Palais des Papes… Where I realised I’d had enough. I had 4 days of my...

I Came Out Willingly To Serve My King & Country – Somme Battlefields

WW1 Centenary website by Paul Reed. I Came Out Willingly To Serve My King & Country. While visiting Hawthorn Ridge in the mid-1980s I happened to notice that one of the graves in Hawthorn Ridge No 1 Cemetery. Had a small plaque against it. Looking up the young officer whose grave it was, Eric Rupert Heaton. Aerial view of Hawthorn Ridge defences, 1916. He served with them on the Somme and the men of his platoon named one of their trenches, dug close to the village of Auchonvillers. Eric had hoped to foll...

004 ~ Lest We Forget – TARBA
https://thereandreluctantlybackagain.wordpress.com/2013/05/09/004-lest-we-forget
There and (reluctantly) back again. May 9, 2013. 004 Lest We Forget. There are several other posts I’ve been meaning to make but not quite gotten around to, but this is going to take precedence because it’s been on my mind all week. The opening paragraph is what really stuck with me:. It’s almost humorous in its sheer Britishness. The stereotype that we are a people whose attitude is one of, ‘winning doesn’t matter, it’s the taking part that counts! I have a mental image of politicians sitting around a t...
