African Re-greening Initiatives: November 2013

http://africa-regreening.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 20 November 2013. AFRICAN RE-GREENING UPDATE 2013 NO.3. This was barren land in Central Niger less than 15 years ago. The use of simple water harvesting techniques restored the land to productivity. It has taken much longer to produce this update than predicted in update no.3, but the advantage is that we have a lot of good news to report. There is a growing interest in restoring degraded land using a mix of proven practices, including farmer-managed re-greening. REGIS-ER stands for Resilience...

Tuesday, 27 November 2012. November 2012: PATHWAYS TO SCALING RE-GREENING SUCCESSES IN AFRICA’S DRYLANDS. A delegation from Nigeria visits the village of Dan Saga (Aguié district, Niger) to draw lessons from Niger’s re-greening experience for agroforestry policy and practice in Nigeria. The delegation got some hands on training by the farmers in selection of stems and in pruning. 8195; Why is it important to scale existing farmer managed re-greening? If micro dosing could be introduced during the next 5 ...

Monday, 9 May 2011. Update nr. 4. How did this agroforestry parkland emerge? Just a few remarks and observations:. A SahelECO and its predecessor SOS Sahel UK have promoted farmer-managed re-greening since the middle of the 1990s. B The radio station of Bankass was used to spread the information about the new forestry law of 1995. D Traditional institutions responsible for the management of trees (Barahogon and others) have been successfully revived in this region. Source: Gray Tapan USGS-EROS. F Gray Ta...

Zai Holes | Reckless Farming

Howdy Partner →. December 4, 2011. At Ukulima farm, we have converted a plot of land to zai holes in order to research ways in which to improve upon the zai hole technique. The zai hole experiment is designed to test the effect composted manure and a legume intercrop has on overall sorghum grain production. Sorghum is a grain that is grown widely throughout Africa as it’s more drought tolerant than corn. The four legumes intercropped with the sorghum are. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Twitching | Reckless Farming

South Africa Research Project. September 17, 2011. The trees are budding and flowering, the insects are flying through the windows at night, and the birds are building their nests. Many new birds have been flying back to the area, which has made it a great time for twitching. If you are confused as to why I have been spending so much time twitching, the twitching I am referring to is the act of spotting a bird species. Go here. For more on twitching. September 27, 2011. Here is a great article. Featuring Howard Buffett and his quest to promote soil conservation. His foundation funds large scale agricultural research all the way down to research focused on the small scale farmer. ECHO’s research at Ukulima farm would fit more into the small scale end. Weed-whackers are about as high tech as we get; I’m not going to be driving the combine here at Ukulima any time soon. Thanks for passing on the link Andy Cotarelo! July 13, 2012. Local Impact of ECHO’s Research in South Africa. This past season, ECHO established a half hectare plot of moringa trees for use in future intercropping studies. Because of the moringa research plot at Kulinda Farm, our team of South African workers from the nearby town of Alma have learned how to care for the trees, make moringa leaf powder, and establish trees near their home. The nutritional value of moringa can be viewed here. Judelon tells the story here:. Today I sat across a table f...
