Tuesday, May 30, 2006. Gunning down meritocracy in academia. A short and sweet discussion topic. Merit is broadly used to justify policy and action in academia: shall a student be allowed to study? Shall a teach be permitted to teach? Shall a school receive funding? Shall racial and economic representation be affirmatively enacted? Let me offer as an alternative notion the idea that education ought exist not to reward the most meritorious, but to provide any. Posted by lex at 12:04 PM. How does that feel?

alexis nexus: The Tyranny of the Questioner

http://alexisnexus.blogspot.com/2005/12/tyranny-of-questioner.html

Wednesday, December 14, 2005. The Tyranny of the Questioner. In a recent post on her very own Online Journal, Alexis discussed. Some realizations she had that came about as a result of somebody objecting to the way she was having a discussion. The complaint, as I understand it, was that she was asking questions in a leading way, using semi-rhetorical questions to lead the others on in a way that tended to allow her to dominate the conversation; in a way that Socrates is often accused of having done.

http://alexisnexus.blogspot.com/2005/11/enemy-mine-translations.html

Saturday, November 12, 2005. Enemy Mine - Translations. I was discussing race and gender with some students the other day, and asked the question of (five black female students): "Could I ever really (added the "ever" and "really" for emphasis) understand what it is like being a black woman in America? I am torn. On one hand I am willing to take a Wittgensteinian approach and say our communication is necessarily public and straightforward, that there are no 'private' experiences incapable of expressi...

alexis nexus: April 2006

http://alexisnexus.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 11, 2006. I know that none of us has enough time to write here- and, to reflect that, I'm curious what y'all think about the whole idea of 'making meaning' in life. Lex is almost done with her PhD, Steve's teaching and has a coolio family.these things are huge goals that y'all (at some point) set for yourselves and are now finding yourselves achieving. How does that feel? Is there any sort of meaning in life apart from picking these things to do and doing them? Incoherent or just wrong?

alexis nexus: Hierarchies and Webs

http://alexisnexus.blogspot.com/2005/11/hierarchies-and-webs.html

Friday, November 18, 2005. So I've been thinking about the notion of hierarchies (in part because of our discussion. Of what it is like to really. Know what somebody else's experiences ar e like. In that discussion, I pointed out that:. I think your "circles of understanding" is pretty good, and add to it that circles are not nested in a strict hierarchy: the middle class black man may share a lot of perspectives with you, but the rich white man may share different perspectives with you. Im here, im queer.

alexis nexus: wenn das Kind ein Kind war, fragt es "warum bin ich mich, und nicht dich?"

http://alexisnexus.blogspot.com/2005/11/wenn-das-kind-ein-kind-war-fragt-es.html

Tuesday, November 29, 2005. Wenn das Kind ein Kind war, fragt es "warum bin ich mich, und nicht dich? Jeff's most recent friday simone de beauvoir blog. Raised the point "The interesting fact that, for me to come into being as the person I am, it is at once a wholly improbably sort of thing and almost completely causally necessary thing- or at least, it feels both of these ways, some of the time." or in simone's words. Sometimes I wake up with a feeling of childish amazement- why am I myself? I was left ...

Thursday, April 20, 2006. I've been thinking about a post about the Fat Acceptance movement for a while now, because there is something that has bothered me about a lot of things associated with that movement. Reading stuff in the Big Fat Carnival makes me feel that now-familar feeling that I must be missing something, that I need to read more about it and listen more to that community, because I must just not get it. But then I read this post over at peggynature's blog. Weight is just as silly as thinki...

JeffLivesHere: Pop Culture Edition. Tuesday, April 18, 2006. Now I Have to Stop Buying Certain Comics Because They Have Become Nike Ads. I know people will say it was bound to happen, but product placement in comics. Just makes me sad. And a little angry. I'm naive, what can I say. The interesting thing is that the Wall Street Journal article points out that 'this isn't new' and it's really 'not so bad':. See, that's the thing. I think in this case, 'less overt' is worse. Friday, April 14, 2006. I've hunted and hunted for the exact quote, but I've lost my "The Myth of Sisyphus" book, so I'll just paraphrase Camus. (I mean, what's the point of being an existentialist philosopher if you don't have people misquoting and oversimplifying your points, really? He notes that it isn't people that are absurd, or the world that is absurd, but our relationship to the world that is absurd. I'm sure Camus had some deep reasons for thinking this (if he did! But the thing is this: This is.

Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Burn a Flag a Day. It's amazing that while I'm sitting here trying to (in some sense) defend the Democratic party as the lesser of two evils. That one of its leaders is still spending a good deal of her time on a flag burning amendment. Luckily you can email Feinstein from the bottom of her statment. I can't believe she's spending so much time on this crap when there are so many important things that need to be done. It's infuriating. Well, you can't argue with that! In what may b...

Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Just What I Needed, More to Think About. So my first therapy session was pretty much as expected. A few nice suprises that have nothing to do with therapy at all, really: It didn't rain when I went into SF for my appointment last night (I had some worries that if it rained a lot I'd use it as an excuse to not go). Also, it's not so far from 24th street BART, Papalote(sp? Some things that were not much of a suprise, therapy-wise:. There was a clock prominently displayed. It's we...

Sunday, March 26, 2006. I stumbled across an interview with Sharon Salzberg. Who has written some books on the subject of faith in general- from but it seems not completely limited by her own Buddhist perspective. One of the things she said struck me as particularly meaningful to my present situation, as well as a strong sense of empathy that I got when I read somthing k recently talked about in her blog. I'm not in the give-up-and-move-to-Canada mindset or anything (particularly since Canada just elected the most right-wing group of people it ever has, apparently); I think that the freedoms we have still lend themselves to some truly progressive possibilities, and the backlash against Bush Jr. doesn't mean nothing at all.
