Alex Sings | The Music and Lyrics of Alex Hickey
http://www.alexsings.ca/welcome
The Day the Money Run Out (2010). To my brand-new, spiffed-up, totally shiny and fluffy Web site. Why not get yourself a cup of tea and stay a while – listen to some tunes, tap your toes and hum along? That’s me in the picture on the right – Alex Hickey a Nova Scotian singer-songwriter who writes catchy, down-to-earth folk and country songs about poisonings, love, bicycles, feminism, economics, cellphone service and many other things. I’d be willing to bet that I have a song that will make you smile.

alexsings: Song #16: Queen Street Coffee (2015 52-song Project)
http://alexsings.blogspot.com/2015/04/song-16-queen-street-coffee-2015-52.html
A blog about singing, songwriting, creativity and community. Sunday, April 19, 2015. Song #16: Queen Street Coffee (2015 52-song Project). This is a pretty old song which I wrote in my early 20s when I lived in Toronto. This song was composed on my back back when I was an avid cycle commuter. It's essentially about a "relationship hangover", the experience of one relationship hanging on and overshadowing the beginning of the next relationship. Posted by www.alexsings.ca. Labels: 2015 52-song Project.

alexsings: January 2015
http://alexsings.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
A blog about singing, songwriting, creativity and community. Sunday, January 25, 2015. Song #4: Chainsaw Boots! I wrote this song in the summer of 2014, while I was splitting up my firewood in my steel-toed, orange Chainsaw boots. This song is a great favourite in my home community of West Dublin. If I don't wear my boots to the firehall breakfast, I'll almost always get asked where they are. And when I do wear them anywhere, I'm sure to encounter at least one person who'll say "Nice Boots! I don't regre...

http://alexsings.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
A blog about singing, songwriting, creativity and community. Friday, August 9, 2013. Lunenburg Folk Harbour's First Songwriting Camp. It's been an intense few days. Wow. Co-facilitating the first ever Folk Harbour Songwriting Camp with Kev Corbett. We went over structure and lyric-writing technique. We listened to songs by masters of the craft. We worked on figuring out guitars and PAs and our voices. We were lucky enough to have visits from David Myles. And we wrote. It was a jam-packed few days. Alex H...

The Day the Money Run Out (2010). Download the album art and lyric booklet here (PDF 8.2MB). On the day Rob Ford was elected Mayor of Toronto in 2010, Alex Hickey posted on Facebook: Doesn’t anyone out home have a room they could rent me? And eight weeks later she was back home in Nova Scotia, living on the South Shore in West Dublin. There’s a song about shale gas extraction (. Can’t Be Rich On Shattered Land. Love songs, both doomed and hopeful (. And songs celebrating the land (. 4 Doris’ Song. 10 My ...

alexsings: Song #15: Portland Street (2015 52-song Project)
http://alexsings.blogspot.com/2015/04/song-15-portland-street.html
A blog about singing, songwriting, creativity and community. Sunday, April 12, 2015. Song #15: Portland Street (2015 52-song Project). This is a song about the terrible trap of living in over-priced rental accommodation. Often, when a person can't save up enough to put a down-payment to own their own house, or if their rent is such a high a proportion of their income that they are financially hamstrung, they end up at the mercy of less-than-decent landlords. Please see YouTube for the final lyrics.

alexsings: Song #17: Tecumseth (2015 52-song Project)
http://alexsings.blogspot.com/2015/04/song-17-tecumseth-2015-52-song-project.html
A blog about singing, songwriting, creativity and community. Sunday, April 26, 2015. Song #17: Tecumseth (2015 52-song Project). Tecumseth is a short street in Toronto that runs from Queen West to the railroad tracks. When I lived in Toronto, I often used it as a cycling route/shortcut from downtown to the west end. I never lived on Tecumseth, but about 20-odd-years-ago, I had a dream that I had. That dream resulted in this song:. And I can still vividly remember that dream. Even after all these years.
