Daily Archives: October 23, 2014. October 23, 2014. All Boundaries Are Conventions. 8220;All Boundaries Are Conventions” has been haunting me since I watched. Three days ago. The theme is featured throughout the movie, but this particular rendition plays during the description and vision of paradise. It is beautiful, full of hope and eager expectation, and if allowed to resolve, would be hugely euphoric. But it doesn’t. What makes it alive? What allows it to grip me so? Into the Lake I’ll Go.

May 25, 2015. Into the Lake I’ll Go. When summer slays the winter’s freeze,. And waves roll with the balmy breeze,. Into the lake I’ll go. But two weeks the dock’s been off the shore,. For eight, the waters danced, restored,. And still I cannot go. For thawed and melted it may seem,. Frozen idylls echo on,. One in black, and one in white,. One of dreams that fade at dawn. Shards of memory pierce the stillness,. Sink the sorrow, goodbye Otis,. But what was past will not be gone. Into the lake I’ll go.

At the end of the first verse, he says, Listen I’m warming up and you’re misinformed if/ You think that I’m slipping up, this ain’t sick enough, then I’ll skip the chorus, and he skips the chorus! I love that he makes the structure work for him, and that he doesn’t allow himself to be constrained to the expected pattern. Into the Lake I’ll Go. Hallelujah, Merry Christmas.

Erik talks about discourse, the divine, and other stuff. October 1, 2015. One of the most ironic problems crippling productive political dialogue today is the need to sound smart. Because we’re afraid to sound stupid or misinformed about a given issue, we usually cling to whatever latest soundbite we heard (e.g., I support Clinton’s plan to make college affordable again! One of the biggest threats to an inconsistent, shoddily cobbled together stance on politics is someone actually asking us. 8220;if grac...

Erik talks about discourse, the divine, and other stuff. Ice Buckets and the Nature of Critique. September 7, 2014. Ice Buckets and the Nature of Critique. I’ll guess it’s pretty safe to say that the ALS Ice Bucket craze has pretty much come and gone by now. I mean, even church youth groups have done it by now, a telltale sign that something used to be really cool which means I’m just in time to weigh in. Don’t ALS researchers kill babies? Isn’t cancer a worse sickness to die from? Moral of the story?
