Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Thursday, April 23, 2015. Vacation - Timmendorfer Strand. When we tell folks here "We're going to the USofA" they always say "Have a nice vacation! I kindly tell them that that is not. A vacation (please don't be insulted, my dear US family and friends! In German means beach and it is a lovely beach, perhaps even by Florida standards. Or close. Like the Gulf, waves are optional here. Here we have Strandkörbe. Our apartment was great! Since the weather was so wonderful, ...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Monday, July 21, 2014. End of Year Trip. So, the class from Platjenwerber has finished yet another year of English with Sharon. It is often hard to assess what we have learned, but not hard to assess how much fun we have - we have a lot of fun! And we celebrate the end of the "school year" with some sort of event. We've often done rowing the last few years - even twice with Hunter and Hannah and once with Michelle. It was a nice easy go - 15 miles with a stop along the ...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Sunday, December 21, 2014. It's not so complicated. Arrive and depart from Orlando. Visit family in three different locations, friends in two others. Drive a lot. Eat a lot. After greeting the little ones with jumping up and down and hugs, we started on prep for Thanksgiving - our second within a week! It was a good thing that we had most of Sunday to catch up and chat and talk and look at stuff because the rest of the week was B U S Y. School of course, meetings and ho...

Postings from Germany: March 2015

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Saturday, March 28, 2015. It's still cold outside, of course, but we can bring a little springtime inside. At the market they have all kinds of branches with buds but not yet blooms - forsythia, cherry, hazelnut, apple. Bring them inside and put them in water in a sunny place and you have blossoms. We chose some apple branches last week to hang our painted eggs from and now the flowers are out. How sweet. I'm getting my chickens all in a row! Tuesday, March 17, 2015.

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Wednesday, July 29, 2015. Our neighbors have taken a little vacation so we (read: Werner) are looking after the mail and the indoor plants. But there are some outdoor plants, too, and Friend says, "There are loads of currants still. Pick as many as you like! I'm going to Friends. Shall I pick some currants? I used some on the salads, some on the morning cereal, but there's still LOTS. Question: What to do? Cook it up. Add more sugar. We have so many jars of breakfast sw...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Saturday, May 10, 2014. WE had a little get-away with Ursel. Since she's on her own, it's nice to share little holidays and besides, she's a really congenial travel partner. Pair her with the MOST congenial travel partner - that would be Werner - and it's a GREAT little get-away! It was built in the mid-1600s - so, yes, it's over 300 years old - built when the town was founded and in the meantime lovingly restored and updated. It is a little jewel. I seriously. The old ...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Thursday, January 08, 2015. Holiday Round-Up - Christmas, New Year. Ah well, need to clean up the old year and get started anew. It's already 2015 (Happy New Year! So here's a wrap-up of end-of-year festivities. After returning from the USofA and after not quite acclimating to local time, we had Christmas Eve dinner with friends and their family. Fondue, songs, conversation. It was warm and comforting. And of course a bit of dancing and spouting off fire into the air...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Sunday, September 28, 2014. René is now 49. Years. Old. Ouch. He's dealing with it just fine, but we know what that means. Werner is getting O L D. The weather was so cooperative! Tables, standing and otherwise, out in the back yard. Dishes and utensils ready in the kitchen for eating the goodies. Wow A whole wild boar, days before bathed in fresh herbs and oil, then rubbed with spices and spread over a wood fire. This guy can grill. I kid you not. Here's to the birthda...

Hunter and Hannah in Germany 2011. Sunday, August 24, 2014. Emden, Germany - Rain, Bikes, Rain, Rain. We wanted a bit of time to take "circle trips" with our bikes - stay at a fixed center, take day trips from wherever we were and bike to and from there and back. Of course you understand. Emden is north of here, on the river Ems. There are, as always here, lovely villages and landscapes to visit from a hub. And Emden offers other attractions, among them a world-class art museum. OK, let's go! I have to r...
