Philip Hartigan: Art, Films, Words. Five stages of an etching. One thing I love seeing when I visit museums is a printmaker's stage proofs. Here are five stages of one my acrylic resist etchings from the last 9 months (8" x 8" on copper plate). First stage: acrylic spray aquatint, with the cloud created by spit bite, then stopped out, and the figure and extra textures in the cloud created by immersion in ferric chloride. Stage two: further stopping out and etching. A Better Softground Etching. 8203;In ar...

http://www.artistphiliphartigan.com/about-me.html
Philip Hartigan: Art, Films, Words. I was born in the UK, went to Cambridge to read English and American Literature, then later to Winchester School of Art to do a postgraduate degree in painting. My studio work combines text and image, exploring half-remembered moments from a childhood in an English mining town - because I believe, as Hemingway said, that "every artist has a duty to the place he knows best either to destroy it or commemorate it.".

Monday, October 27, 2014. The Sum of its Parts. In my studio, there was a box full of mini paintings that don't quite work. Somehow they lacked a certain je ne sais quoi. Somehow they needed a little something more. Or perhaps less. They didn't look right, but weren't so terrible that they needed to be completely painted over. They were half-formed. And at home, I had a few little odd pieces that didn't sell. Things that languished unsold on Etsy forever, it seemed. No, not this Synergy. I found myself w...

Artist Philip Hartigan talks about art, interviews other artists, and more. Thursday, July 23, 2015. Sound as a Pound. It made me realise that I hadn't read any Ezra Pound in many years, even though I always loved his work when I was a student. So over the weekend I bought this:. Panisks, and from the oak, dryas,. And from the apple, mælid,. Through all the wood, and the leaves are full of voices,. A-whisper, and the clouds bowe over the lake,. And there are gods upon them,. As Poggio has remarked. I als...

Oak Park, consists of tree branches and limbs connected by shrink wrap and tape that clamber up off the ground and claw spikily at the air, denuded of foliage but seemingly revivified into a new stage of growth.
