60 Second Director: A magnificent commercial. Read this before you try to do something like it.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-magnificent-commercial-read-this.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Tuesday, March 10, 2015. A magnificent commercial. Read this before you try to do something like it. A beautiful piece of video showed up in my Facebook feed. The other day. But before I share it with you, I feel it’s my duty to give you a little background. But what makes a piece of communication amazing is always –– always –– the emotional bit. Not the message, but the way it’s delivered. The way Apple chose to do it in 1983 –&...
60 Second Director: What is a director worth these days?
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/08/what-is-director-worth-these-days.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Monday, August 3, 2009. What is a director worth these days? I was just offered $1,000 to shoot a one-day job. That might sound like a decent amount, but it's not, and I'm not just saying that because I think I deserve to be expensive. I also do at the very least a first cut of the spot. Which usually requires at least three days to load, review, and cut the footage. Let's call it thirteen days. Am I saying not to take any job that pay...
60 Second Director: Why JJ Abrams is worth every $#%&!!! cent he makes.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/06/why-jj-abrams-is-worth-every-cent-he.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Tuesday, June 9, 2009. Why JJ Abrams is worth every $#%&! I just saw the latest Star Trek movie. If you haven't seen it yet, go now. If you have, go again. That movie is a two-hour master class in one of the most important aspects of story you can learn. I call it "Bad to worse.". What you need is to have a protagonist trying to overcome challenges and failing. Or succeeding only to face bigger challenges. Preferably both. An example o...
60 Second Director: Why simple is not so simple.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2015/03/why-simple-is-not-so-simple.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Monday, March 2, 2015. Why simple is not so simple. It's one of the basic tenets of advertising: simple messages communicate more powerfully than complicated ones. Back when I was a baby copywriter, we used to bitch about how the creative briefs we were given kept getting bigger and bigger. Yes, even at a storied ad agency like Chiat/Day. But not being told whether it will even turn left. That was years ago. Since then, media has b...
60 Second Director: Friends will let you starve. Strangers will give you work.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/06/friends-will-let-you-starve-strangers.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Thursday, June 25, 2009. Friends will let you starve. Strangers will give you work. I was told this quote by Mary Knox, the executive producer at Curious Pictures, who attributed it to John Kamen, who runs @radical media. It probably applies to some degree in a lot of businesses, but it's particularly poignant in directing, where your professional fate is determined a single job at a time. It's been more than ten years since the last t...
60 Second Director: Let's be careful out there.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2015/03/lets-be-careful-out-there.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Friday, March 20, 2015. Let's be careful out there. One of my first projects as a baby director was a spot I offered to finance and shoot for a friend of a friend. It was a pretty ambitious production –– a post-apocalyptic story involving a golfer in a gyrocopter. At one point, I wanted to give some notes to the actor, so I walked from where I’d been standing by the camera toward the flying contraption he was sitting in. The director o...
60 Second Director: My newest toy is just like my career.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/09/my-newest-toy-is-just-like-my-career.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Friday, September 4, 2009. My newest toy is just like my career. Last Saturday, I stumbled into a garage sale where I saw something I've coveted for years, but could never justify spending the money for. I got it for $20. And since then, I've become obsessed with learning how to use it. And then there's the pulling. The pulling is the part that looks theatrical. It's where you pull up a lever, hold it, and then pull it down, fo...One a...
60 Second Director: A Ham Sandwich isn't what it used to be.
http://60secdirector.blogspot.com/2009/07/ham-sandwich-isnt-what-it-used-to-be.html
Want to learn how to be a better director? It'll take about a minute. Thursday, July 30, 2009. A Ham Sandwich isn't what it used to be. The world is a different place since Hitchcock either did or didn't come up with the idea of the Ham Sandwich (if you don't know what I'm talking about, read my last post). What that means for you, Aspiring Filmmaker, is that you're going to have to work a lot harder to get –– and keep –– your audience's attention than Mr. Hitchcock ever did. See how far we've come?

Brian Belefant | Creative Director/Copywriter
The tip of the proverbial iceberg. I came up as a copywriter when true geniuses were defining the craft. Ed McCabe, Tom McElligot, Hal Riney, Penny Kapousouz. I learned from all of them, more than any of them know. One of the things I learned is that powerful communication requires more than great writing. And so I’ve put a ton of time and effort into learning about directing, editing, designing, and art directing. PO Box 82084, Portland, OR 97282. 1 (503) 715 2852. The most important work I’m doing.
Brian Belefant | Audacious thinking that goes a long way toward subverting the dominant paradigm
If you’re David, I’m your slingshot. I’m the guy you bring in when the odds are against you. When you’re up against somebody with more resources and a better established name. Or as I like to think of it, somebody with more to lose. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve worked for category leaders Visa, Skippy, Chase Manhattan, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Toyota to name a few and I’ve done a tremendous job. But I’d much rather storm the hill than defend it. If you work with me, you will be uncomfortable.
Liquid Filtration by Brian Belefant | Photographs taken through liquids that are relevant to the subject (for real)
What I do and why. Photographs taken through liquids (for real). I’m totally intrigued by the notion of terroir that a place informs the flavors of stuff that comes from there. So I figured out a way to interpret terroir photographically. I came up with a contraption that allows me to photograph through liquids. I happen to think it’s a really nice shot. It’s even nicer when you know that I shot it through a citrus marinade. PO Box 82084, Portland OR 97282. 1 (503) 715 2852. 4" x 4" = $10. 6" x 6" = $20.

Used to be on the reel. Back when I first became a copywriter, I thought directors were all mysterious, powerful people who knew the secrets to human motivation. Turns out it’s not true. Only some are. And I’m one of them. You will now explore my recent work, after which you will send me boards to bid on. You can’t help it. I compel you to. Brian Belefant, DGA. 2015, Brian Belefant.
Belefante | Una vez no amé y fue peor.
Una vez no amé y fue peor. JURO QUE TE AMÉ. Hoy no es mi cumpleaños. Y así, miles. Mil quinientos dos mil catorce. Ni te estoy mirando. La única y mejor opción. Toda la minita del mundo. Un año, 8 meses y 15 días. Trata(n)do sobre las siete. El perro de la calle. Te pido mildis) Culpas. De lo que duele. Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda. Lo soy, lo espero. Acá están mis tetas. Vuelvo a la mesa festiva, angustiada. Teresa se acerca con la intención de conversar. Es entendible, junto con mi primo, somos los ...Me pr...
