The color of money (on Etsy). Etsy's product posting are so interesting because the seller is often the producer, or at least very close to the producer. The postings are personal. But, what if we bifurcated the current product listing and looked at the 50,000 most expensive and 50,000 least expensive items on Etsy. How would they differ? Total color mentions: 45,851. Total color mentions: 21,289. Total and/or mentions: 9,930. Total and/or mentions: 6,260. Ok, what was this? Mostly just a quick experimen...

Each day I scrape the top 5 pages' worth of story titles, kickers, and response numbers, take a wordcount of all the words in the titles and kickers, and then weight those numbers by the rate of responses to those articles. Below you see the top 500 words by weighted count (and square-rooted, to make a better scale). I'm excited to see how and if it changes over time.

Where am I going? I was curious where I was going and coming from most often over the past few months while using the Capital Bikeshare in DC. So I mapped it. The darker the line, the more frequently I took that route, the thicker it is the slower I went.

Where to go for (a lot of/good) pizza in DC? Mapping apps usually give us a lot of choice, too much choice. The maps they serve us usually display the sheer number of options, and we have to delve into each one to figure out what's good or bad. Further, after making our choice we'll often bee-line to one place, not checking out the neighborhood around it for other potential options. This analysis borrowed heavilly from the work of mbostock. I spend my time studying gravity using computers. I enjoy this a great deal because I get to combine my love of mathematics with my enjoyment of programming with my sense of wonder at the world.
