Generally the earth has accepted the effects of human impact whilst it has continued to support the life of trillions of lifeforms. However, advancing technology and the expanding populations are now threatening to overwhelm the earth's adaptation through their actions. Greater demands are being made on the earth's resources at a time when the degradation of the life support systems indicates less should be used, or at least used more conservatively.

Mitigating against climate change is our only hope

We must give greater consideration to designing and implementing both mitigation and adaptation strategies for the inevitable climate shift to polar and sub-polar climes in UK. Mitigation strategies for our roads, foundations, buildings, infrastructure, fuel lines and power networks from periglacial conditions should be given our highest priority as these will have the greatest impact on our society and civil structures.
