The Birdless Cuddesdon Blog: The Caucasus Mountains, Georgia
http://birdlesscuddesdon.blogspot.com/2014/05/the-caucasus-mountains-georgia_7.html
Wednesday, 7 May 2014. The Caucasus Mountains, Georgia. I'm just back from 6 days in Kazbegi, near the Georgian-Russian border in the Greater Caucasus mountains. The landscapes were phenomenal:. There are bird species found here and nowhere else on Earth. As the old Georgian saying goes: "თქვენ იცით, რომ თქვენ არ გადაძვრა მაღალი როცა შურთხი ფრენა ქვეშ თქვენ". Or: "You know you have climbed high when the Snowcock fly beneath you". This is a more typical view from underneath the bird of the mountain tops:.
The Birdless Cuddesdon Blog: And the worst county for rare birds in July is....
http://birdlesscuddesdon.blogspot.com/2011/07/and-worst-county-for-rare-birds-in-july.html
Wednesday, 6 July 2011. And the worst county for rare birds in July is. Post from Gnome, I thought I would attempt to work out exactly which was the worst county for Rare or Very Rare species in July in the UK. I dived headlong into the Birdguides database and discovered a whole host of counties many of which I did not even know existed: Offaly? Counties with no Rare or Very Rare Species in July, since July 2000:. And here are the places one should head for:. 12:46 pm, July 20, 2011. Try sitting in the f...
The Birdless Cuddesdon Blog: Norway: Ptarmigan
http://birdlesscuddesdon.blogspot.com/2015/03/norway-ptarmigan.html
Sunday, 22 March 2015. Fortunately I knew that the Ptarmigan would not be on the very top during the winter. I was looking for small lower valleys, ideally with dwarf birch trees that they could feed upon. I choose a random bend in the road, parked my car and set out alone into the snow, reassuring myself with Oates's last words: " I am just going outside, I may be some time. Me on the ridge in full view-master mode. I then headed into the hills behind me in this picture:. I have edited the following pho...

Wednesday, 26 June 2013. Canada: some other animals. It wasn't all about the birds. well, it was, but here are some pictures of some of the other wildlife we encountered during our 7 weeks in Canada. Vancouver Island Black Bear:. Stag Elk. Can I state the obvious? Look at the antlers on that! To dopey-looking Black Bear:. I met a B...
The Birdless Cuddesdon Blog: Early April Sunrises
http://birdlesscuddesdon.blogspot.com/2015/04/early-april-sunrises.html
Tuesday, 14 April 2015. I've been watching the sun rise this week. There have been some cracking mornings:. And this morning, there was even a migrant bird perched out in front of a boiling red dawn: the first Wheatear. One morning I found two Muntjac Deer foraging in the pre-dawn light:. Once the sun got going, the local wildlife began to respond. Singing Corn Bunting. Friday was Peacock Butterfly day, they were everywhere, basking on every patch of open ground:. 67 species for the year. Caucasus Mounta...

Background Info and Access. Monday, 30 March 2015. Saturday and Sunday 28th and 29th March. Winter seems reluctant to release its grip on the season and spring migration appears to have stalled. There was still a lot to see and enjoy despite there not having being a flood of incoming migrants. Goldies among the tussocks (c) Bark Phonescoped. The Grey Herons th...

The Birdless Cuddesdon Blog
Wednesday, 24 February 2016. A farewell to Cuddesdon. I have left Cuddesdon and it feels appropriate to say goodbye with some sort of summing up of my experiences of trying to find birds around the village. There were some fabulous sunrises:. And some fabulous sunsets:. My most satisfying finds:. A stonking (probable Greenland) Wheatear. A trilling fly-over Waxwing. Is there a better start to an early April morning than finding a male Redstart. A reeling Grasshopper Warbler. But lightening can strike twi...

Birdless in Brooklyn
Sunny disposition with occasional showers. View my complete profile. The next gardener in the family. Thursday, July 8, 2010. Plants are truly the craziest things. I've been watering two enormous pots of squash plants all summer. They continually have tons of blossoms, but I've never seen a squash on the plant. Yesterday I watered again after work (it's been brutally hot here this week) and to my total shock, I saw this little guy growing:. It had been growing there all along! Tuesday, July 6, 2010.
