College newspapers are being hurt by the state of the economy, according to Bryan Murley in a PBS MediaShift article published today. Some had assumed "college newspapers would weather the storms of the changing media environment better than their peers in the wider industry," according to Murley. Murley states that college papers are c...

Jim Lehrer, executive editor and anchor of the PBS NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Had some choice words for the growing "woe-is-me" journalist population out there. Calm down," he said at a recent talk at the University of Oklahoma. You know, in a lot of ways he's right. But the problem remains on how the news business can make money, especially as i...

Keeping an eye on the state of journalism and what tomorrow may hold. Tuesday, October 28, 2008. That didn't take long. Posted by Craig Kanalley. Ironic timing, considering my last blog entry, but the next Capital Times has in fact arrived. The highly-respected, 100-year-old Christian Science Monitor announced today that it will stop printing its daily edition, in favor of going Web only and printing just once a week. Here's the official story. From Christian Science Monitor itself. According to the hist...

http://blog2.craigkanalley.com/2009/01/uncertainty-in-seattle.html
Keeping an eye on the state of journalism and what tomorrow may hold. Saturday, January 10, 2009. Posted by Craig Kanalley. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has served its community for 146 years, but right now the publication is on pins and needles. Whirlwind: I'm here..
http://blog.craigkanalley.com/2008/09/im-here.html
So friends and family can see what I'm up to in the Big Apple. Saturday, September 6, 2008. Posted by Craig Kanalley. But I'm so tired, I'll probably fall asleep typing. Last night, my parents, my sister, my girlfriend, and I (practically) sacrificed a night's sleep to drive from Buffalo to Chicago. We drove through the night - - from 12:30 am to 10 am (9 am in Chicago after the time difference). There were few Zzz's during the drive. Honestly, how do you sleep in a van? 2 comments on "I'm here.".

That's the first word that comes to mind to describe tonight. I've only experienced two events anything like tonight in my life. And this goes back to my love for sports as much does! Those are my initial impressions from the event. Surely, this was history - that's just my "piece," my little take on tonight. Video from my vantage point:.

Delving into one of my greatest hobbies and America's favorite pastimes. Saturday, February 20, 2010. Posted by Craig Kanalley. I never met him, but I've heard so many stories. My grandfather Kenneth Wallace Kanalley died of a massive heartattack 30 years ago to the day on Feb. 20, 1980. He was 47 years old. Back in the day, he played hockey with Pierre Pilote before Pilote went on to an outstanding NHL career and was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame. Today was a special day for my family for another r...

So friends and family can see what I'm up to in the Big Apple. Monday, January 5, 2009. My Holiday Break from A to Z. Posted by Craig Kanalley. I'm now back in Chicago, but you're probably wondering, where've you been the last month? I had such a great Holiday Break in Western New York that I have no clue where to start. Rather than assemble a chronological review or try to sort events from most memorable to least, I threw together this collection of memories from A-Z. E is for Engaged, Nicole and I's ne...

So friends and family can see what I'm up to in the Big Apple. Friday, May 29, 2009. My first game at Wrigley Field. Posted by Craig Kanalley. It didn't take long to size up the place. Small That was my first reaction. As the game went on, I soon saw why the place was so special. So this is what Wrigley Field is all about, I thought. It was comforting in a way, an escape from the rush of reality and chaos of the city streets. Please, I just want some offense! I got that, and a whole lot more. It was a Wh...

Delving into one of my greatest hobbies and America's favorite pastimes. Monday, February 11, 2013. My 31st Great-Grandmother, St. Adela. Posted by Craig Kanalley. In November 2008, I confirmed that I was a descendant of royalty. Tonight, four years and a few months later, I was browsing the Internet to learn more about these royal lines, and I discovered that one of my ancestors was a Catholic saint. There's an interesting piece about her here. She was known most commonly as Adèle of France, Adela of Fl...

Keeping an eye on the state of journalism and what tomorrow may hold. Saturday, April 18, 2009. Twitter's impact on media only beginning. Posted by Craig Kanalley. There's been quite a debate among journalism circles whether Twitter is just a fad or if it will be around for the long haul. I believe the latter. If not Twitter itself, a service near identical to it - one based on microblogging - will influence the media for years to come. Also today, Evan Williams, CEO of Twitter, said on Oprah that his se...
