The Sheep | The Orkney Sheep Foundation
http://www.theorkneysheepfoundation.org.uk/the-sheep
These are an ancient breed of sheep small, hardy and short-tailed and managed under a communal shepherding system. Confined to the seashore by the drystone dyke encircling the island, they survive on a diet of seaweed to which they have become adapted. They are part of the family of short-tailed sheep found in various parts of northern Europe and on some of the Atlantic islands. A drystone wall was constructed, above the high water line around the complete circumference of the island, and completed in 18...

It is a place where one can get nearer to the Orkney of old than anywhere else. North Ronaldsay, the most northerly of the Orkney Islands, has a cultural richness and social significance which far outweighs the physical presence of this small island. It sits on a busy sea lane where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean and where ancient history rubs shoulders with modernity. Lawyer, purchased the island in 1727 and built his island home at the settlement of Hollandstoun. Since then the sheeps’ existenc...

The dyke is regarded by Historic Scotland as ’probably the largest drystone construction conceived of as a single entity in the world’. And highlighted in the Buildings At Risk Register for Scotland. It was completed in 1832 to confine the native sheep to the foreshore and so protect the cultivated land and crops from their wanderings. The community is work...

In post-War years the outer islands of Orkney experienced population decline, as people moved to other communities for opportunities, some to the cities and some to Canada or Australia. It was part of an outward tide from various outlying communities in Scotland, where limited amenities and employment led people to move. The scale of damage that they have had to cope with is immense. During December 2012 and January 2013 the island was hit by fierce storms and rip tides the worst in 40 years and seve...
