The Word Count is Rising. I have approached the 40k word mark on my novel, and it’s getting really difficult. So far, the pacing is pretty solid (considering that it is a sloppy first draft), but the lack of detail and description, I feel, is going to make this novel a bit longer after the edits. Indeed, it is a perplexing thought. To remember every place you’ve been–every spot. The gas, the miles, and the breakdowns. The smiles, laughs, and awkward frowns. Indeed, it is a perplexing thought. Of all the sicknesses, and viruses you’ve caught. The times that mom or dad held you–telling you it would be okay.

This (description) has been one of the most challenging things for me the last three weeks since beginning my first novel. Although I have been able to push through it, it is sometimes difficult to know what is too little and what is too much description. The overall rule is to only explain what is essential to the story, but what if there are many parts that are essential to the story? Last night I decided that I was going to submit one of my prose poems to a magazine this particular one was A-Minus. To be completely honest, I didn’t have high hopes of getting it published, and rightly so. This was the first time I had ever submitted something in my life.
