The Origin of Colombo Street Names. Thursday, April 3, 2014. COLOMBO TOWN HALL: A CRYING SHAME. The Old Town Hall (In Main Street, Pettah). Was was designed by J.G. Smither, an architect in the Public Works Department at the Colombo Municipal Council. He also designed the Colombo Museum. The building work started in 1870. The Town Hall was completed in 1873 and was opened by the Governor, Sir William Gregory. It was built as the main office, chambers and hall of the Colombo Municipal Council.

The Origin of Colombo Street Names. Thursday, December 27, 2012. Why is there a Colombo Street in Christchurch, NZ? Like many street names in Colombo it was named by the surveyors, Capt Joseph Thomas and Edward Jollie, in 1850. Apparently they took the name from a list of Anglican bishroprics in Burke's Peerage. A friend texted me recently, pointing out the origin of this street name (in my book I simply offered a few alternatives). The street is off Isipathana Mawatha (formerly Greenlands Road). Maurice de Abrew lived here, a member of the Andriesz-De Abrew family. He was Vice President of the Havelock Sports Club and was famous for introducing rugby to Isipathana (Greenlands) College. The Origin of Colombo Street Names. Thursday, April 3, 2014. Stamboul Place doesn't appear in Colombo Jumbo. That's because it is a Private Road and is not listed in Arjuna'a A-Z Street Atlas. Sir Mohammed Macan Markar Mawatha does. Sir Mohammed owned Villa Stamboul which, when it was built, was the only property between this stretch of Galle Road and the sea.
