History — Daily Bread Co-operative Cambridge

The original Daily Bread Co-operative was established in Northampton by a group of nine Christians. One of their concerns was how to take the Christian message of sharing and mutual support into the workplace. Their response was to form a workers' co-operative - a business owned and controlled by its workers. The Northampton co-operative began trading in 1980 and has grown steadily since then. As an alternative to plastic carrier bags, we encourage our customers to re-use cardboard boxes. Please note that the bags we use for our packing are not recyclable but degradable. You may bring back your plastic bottles for cleaning products to refill at a reduced price. Clothes, books, CDs and light bulb recycling containers are available on our car park. At Daily Bread, we try to put our faith into action by being a workers’ co-operative. We are jointly responsible for the business, seeing ourselves as equals and mutually accountable to each other, as such we have equal remuneration. Decisions are taken by those who have to put them into practice:. We have a weekly business meeting where everyone has opportunity to speak and be involved in the decision making process. For the daily running of the business, we have a different co-ordinator every day.
