In 1972 the Downbeats were formed from an idea of Gregg A. Downs after seeing a local performance of "Up With People". Their first show in 1973 was directed by. Allen L. Downs, then a vocal music instructor at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and accompanied by by his wife, Lois M. Downs.
