Outlines of the Story. Writing family history every day. All posts by ArborFam. Quakers in Ireland, part 3 (or try #3). This attempt at discussing the Quakers in Ireland is based on a book called “In Search of Ireland’s Heroes.” The other tries were based on other books. Hopefully each gives a little piece of the picture. Samuel Shaw left Ireland in 1729. He was about 19 years old. He left with a certificate of transfer from Lisburn Meeting in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Then under James I, a massiv...

Outlines of the Story. Writing family history every day. Samuel Shaw arrived in Pennsylvania as a Quaker. He brought with him a certificate of transfer from the Lisburn Monthly Meeting in County Antrim, Ireland. He settled in William Penn’s colony, which was known as a safe haven for Quakers. In the early 1700s, more Irish and Welsh Quakers came to Pennsylvania and many settled in and around the Philadelphia area. German Protestants, Huguenots, Jews and others also settled Pennsylvania in this period.

Nevertheless, by the time of the Cromwellian Settlement (following the Revolution of 1640), Presbyteria...

Outlines of the Story. Writing family history every day. Quakers in Ireland, part 2 (or try #2). Samuel Shaw, my six-times-great grandfather, was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1710. He emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1729, carrying with him a certificate of transfer from the Lisburn Monthly Meeting in County Antrim. Obviously, this caused much unrest and instability in the area. The Irish families whose land was taken away were upset. Those Irish Catholic families who were left didn’t like...There were ...
