Everyday Scientist

Sunday, October 6, 2013. The sound of science. I was skiing the other day and heard loud booms. The ski patrol was trying to trigger avalanches by detonating explosives. I heard similar booms when I was younger but did not give them much thought. Now, however, maybe because I am surrounded by sound at work, I started paying more attention. As the explosives went off I was surprised because it seemed like I could feel the sound while sitting on the chairlift. How was this possible? Other sound waves are s...

Everyday Scientist: Playground physics phun

http://www.everydayscientist.blogspot.com/2013/08/playground-physics-phun.html

Thursday, August 8, 2013. I was at Barney Park recently riding on a swing and having a great time. Why don't more adults ride swings," I asked one of my older students—let’s call. Because they look ridiculous," Newton replied. I asked if I looked ridiculous and Newton said that I did not need to ride a swing. I like Newton, so I decided not to bump him off his swing. Despite Newtons’s accusation, I continued to ride the swing and thoroughly enjoyed myself while flying through the air. A touch of gray.

Everyday Scientist: Gobble Gobble

http://www.everydayscientist.blogspot.com/2013/08/gobble-gobble_8.html

Thursday, August 8, 2013. It is hard for me to decide what my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is. It heralds what I like to call the Fantastic Three - family, football, and food! While I normally eat more than I should, I thought this year I might learn more about the food I so love, and about some of the food on the table I can do without. Every year in my family the day's discussion is the same leading up to the grand feast, "Is the turkey going to be dry? I have always heard that the turkey we consu...

Everyday Scientist: July 2013

http://www.everydayscientist.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 14, 2013. We started this experiment. When we saturated the water with salt, we made the water much more dense. It was almost so dense the solution could not hold anything else, not even one drop of food coloring, which is why it did not dissipate the way it did in the "pure" water solutions. Next we then learned water and oil don't mix! All in all it is a great experiment and if you have not tried it, you should! The glory that is goo. We made two different types of goo on my garage creative.

Chronicling our families fun, scientific, and creative endeavors. Sunday, October 27, 2013. Heart shaped box circuit. We had our second meeting today of Techno Toys and had a great time! We experimented with a couple different types of switches while learning about basic circuitry. If you would like to make a heart shaped box circuit like below, here is how we did it (if I left something out, please let me know! Hear shaped box circuitry! Seriously the cheapest batteries I have seen). To find inspiration...

The Garage Creative: the sound of science

http://thegaragecreative.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-sound-of-science.html

Chronicling our families fun, scientific, and creative endeavors. Monday, October 7, 2013. The sound of science. What a wonderful way to spend my 35th trip around the sun! Today was the Pepper Festival in Chapel Hill and the garage creative helped celebrate by bringing cardboard, makedo, a sound exhibit, and making sound sandwiches with LOTS of kids! Ready to see how it sounds. The sound of awesome. To do this you need 4 things:. Tongue Depressors (thick popsicle sticks). What you are hearing is the vibr...
