I went to The Old Rauma Cellar the first time I visited Finland as it was the only place we could find that offered reindeer steak. This time I was coming back en-masse. I booked a table for 19 and was pleasantly surprised when they said that was no problem. We are not that hungry, so we decide to skip starters. Or so we think. Fifteen minutes later a plate of salad turns up for everyone as if you do not order a starter, they just give you one for free anyway. Anundilankatu 8, 26100, Rauma.

Pass through security at Helsinki Vantaa terminal 2, and you will find an Irish sports bar named O’Learys that is as old as Elina. We never fly back to the UK without pigging out on some ribs. We begin by ordering 10 chicken wings. We end up getting 14, which means we got bonus wings, but critically an even amount of bonus wings, thereby allowing us to continue to share the wings equally. Pori is on the western coast of Finland and not a place where you would expect to find, for example, a large Nepalese community. Yet, within two blocks of each other, we found two restaurants. We tried Little Himalaya as it is called in English. I have eaten at a fair few restaurants in Finland and typically a main has been 15-25. Food is expensive. Not Pikku Himalaya. Most dishes were 8.50. I got the lunch mix, which was the most expensive thing on the menu, and that was 10. Photo: Central Pori Church.

Located on the river in Uusikaupunki, their terrace is situated under an awning. Every other table has a heat lamp so we quickly jump over to the next table to stay warm. I start with the salmon soup. It fulfils its job entirely, being both a soup and full of fish. Elina has the snails in blue cheese. Each one looks like a tiny smothered chicken. It is pub grub, but a good standard. I would have liked fewer chips and the ribs to have been cooked a little less, but the rest of it was well done.

Hotel Katajanokka used to be a prison until 2002. After closing it was bought by Best Western who transformed it into a hotel and opened the doors to the public in 2007. It retains many of the features such as inset doors, prison staircases and high windows, along with the staff wearing guard and convict outfits. Brilliant. Merikasarminkatu 1, 00160, Helsinki.
