La Florida has been known to archaeologists since 1943, when Edwin Shook visited the site. Sylvanus Morley visited the following year, focusing on the site’s carved monuments. In 1965, Ian Graham made detailed notes and drawings of the site’s monuments as well as a map of part of the El Naranjo Group. In 1997, Paulino Morales mapped more of this group and recovered new monument fragments. Various epigraphers have visited and written about the site as well (see epigraphy. Data/Datos | La Florida-Namaan

The project conducted its first excavations in 2016, opening a series of test pits in plazas from around the site. We also conducted surface collecting and shovel testing in strategic locations. Preliminary ceramic data from these operations indicate that most of the construction at the site began after 550 A.D.
