John William Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina on September 23, 1926 and spent his childhood and teen years in High Point, North Carolina. His father played ukulele and violin, his mother played piano in the church, and both parents sang. The family lived with John's grandfather, a prominent minister in the community. The John Coltrane Memorial Concert Educational Outreach Program (JCMCEOP) is an educational endeavor started over 13 years ago. The purpose is to bring live performance of creative improvisational music to elementary and secondary students in select Boston and Cambridge educational institutions.
