Described as 'one of England's most original architects of the interesting period about 1900', Edgar Wood was to develop a reputation which went beyond national boundaries. He became a founder member of the Northern Art Workers Guild, an important advocate of the Arts and Crafts philosophy in the North West. Wood developed a freedom of style based upon the medieval Gothic which encapsulated both traditional forms of construction and crafted fixtures and fittings all designed by his own hand.

Long Street Methodist Church was originally known as the Wesleyan Chapel and School. It was designed in 1897 and built in 1899-1901. The church and school are beautiful examples of the Arts and Crafts. Movement. They have many internal and external features which represent this unique style.
