May 16, 2003. Our first stop in South America is Quito, Ecuador. Right away the city enchants us with Indians in cultural clothing, mountain vistas at the end of every street, red tile roofs, polished cobblestone streets, wide plazas, and traditional ambiance. UNESCO protects Quito's old town, keeps it in good condition and ensures that new construction blends in with the old architecture. November 14, 2001. From Mopti this morning we began our trek to Timbuktu. This road trip provided a full-body experience; it was bumpy, dusty, unmarked, and long - should we have expected anything else? We passed a lone, mounted Tuareg nomad on the way. Camels provide the most comfortable way to travel in this region. To reach Timbuktu we needed to cross the inland Niger River delta. Never expected to get our feet wet in the desert. Timbuktu skyline. Take our word for it, this is not a party town.

April 11, 2004. After the ceremony let's go to the disco. Hindu ceremonies on Bali splash color, wave flags, burn incense, and require patient kneeling. Forget about a singing fat lady, you know it's over when the priest come out to sprinkle water and pass around offerings. Everyone must wear a sarong and sash for good luck.
