Living for the things I love.In spite of the things I don't". July 18, 2012. Chuckanut 15 Kayak is Launched. After several weeks of building and finishing it was nice to see the kayak in the water. For the initial launch I put it in the Elk River just west of town at Sportsman's Park. The river is wide there and hadn't been affected much by the recent heavy rains. It is easy to get to the water and seemed like a good place to try things out. Well I have to admit feeling a sense of accomplishment sitting ...

Living for the things I love.In spite of the things I don't". November 27, 2011. Carving the Table on Thanksgiving. So, while the last of the dinner goodies were being prepared and the turkey was roasting in the oven I announced to Matt and my son-in-law Grant that their project for the day was to see that all their family members names were carved into the top of our dining room table. We had a wonderful visit with family. Yesterday they all had to leave to get back home to jobs and life. It's q...Ive w...

Living for the things I love.In spite of the things I don't". June 8, 2012. Boat Building: Floorboards and Stain. OK, if you haven't been following the blog we're at the final stages in completing a frame for a Dave Gentry designed Chuckanut. Continuing my plan to go old style I mixed up several Minwax stain colors I had and came up with a darker version of their special walnut color. I stained the floorboards and they immediately looked aged. The knots, which I had hoped would fall out when I sl...Even ...

Living for the things I love.In spite of the things I don't". June 28, 2012. Boatbuilding: Cockpit Coaming and Rubrails. The rear end of the coaming extends a few inches past the backrest. A contour will be cut to let the ends taper into the rear deck. Once both of the coaming slats are cut they are temporarily clamped in place. Now I can back away a little and decide how to contour the ends. I'm using #8 brass screws 1" long and brass finishing washers to hold things in place. With the coaming and backr...

Living for the things I love.In spite of the things I don't". May 30, 2012. Boat Building: Plans, patterns, frames. After a trip to pick up a sheet of 1/2" thick Douglas Fir marine plywood for the frames and a couple of 16' long Southern Yellow Pine boards for stringers I was ready to cut out the pattern for each part. I cut each a little oversize. After they were all cut I used an adhesive spray to glue each one to the plywood. Frames and stems are done! Posted In: Boat Building. View my complete profile.
