Grazing Ventures Blog

Tuesday, 4 October 2016. So I've finally sat down and decide to write a blog post. Instead of boring you with excuses I'll try and bring you all up to date with the year with some pictures! As you know the year started with a horrible cold spring. Here we are vaccinating R2s in the sleet! Because our old sheds couldn't cope with the rainfall, we turfed the calves out early. They had a tough start but are now thriving. Here are the bull teams getting ready for action! We were very fortunate to source seco...

Grazing Ventures Blog: April 2016

http://grazingventures.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Thursday, 7 April 2016. Focussing On The Important Things. A fine view of the Clwydian Range from the runoff block. On the calving front we've sold a lot of late calvers and some empties we fattened overwinter. We're still calving 1-2 a day, with 10 needed to make a nice herd of 400 cows. We did consider milking more and stocking over 4 cows/Ha, but given the slow spring and low payout, instead we're happy to just consolidate the herd with earlier calvers. Split autumn and spring calving. And my own farm.

Grazing Ventures Blog: May 2015

http://grazingventures.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Saturday, 30 May 2015. Pre Mowing: Recreational diesel use? Cows tucking in to premown grass back in 2012. Five years ago we sold our topper and instead bought a mower. This was not to cut silage with, but to specifically premow grass. Topping worked OK, but in some situations the dead grass would lie on the ground and prevent the regrowth shooting through. Here was our justification for the change:. Here are my Dos. For those wishing to try it out:. Mow 12-24 hours in front of cows. Some wilting wil...

Grazing Ventures Blog: March 2015

Wednesday, 18 March 2015. Calf Rearing: Laborious fun! Today's post is all about rearing calves. Undoubtedly the most labour intensive task at this time of year! Calf rearing at Tre Abbot. Now to start off I think I should admit I'm not an expert calf rearer. We run a simple system that suits our facilities and circumstances. There are many ways to rear calves and ultimately if you're happy with your calves and eventual heifers, then you're doing something right! Early on, and move it to a different grou...

Grazing Ventures Blog: Lessons from New Zealand

Wednesday, 20 January 2016. Lessons from New Zealand. Season's greetings to everyone reading this. I hope 2015 was a good year for you and that 2016 proves a prosperous one. I haven't blogged for a while now, I've been enjoying time with my family and thought it best to wait until I felt a bit more "inspired" by a particular topic. So without further digression here's a blog all about my recent trip to New Zealand. If you'd rather not read the "travelogue" then just skip to the bullet points! I did take ...

Monday, May 19, 2008. Special Day: Becoming a Samoan High Chief. Posted by Vik at 9:35 PM. Wednesday, March 12, 2008. I've been to PagoPago, by 12 seater airplane, a ride offering magnificent views. I've been putting togeather the new primary school library, donated by NZ Aid, Fautua Sagato and my Mom. Along with the help of Pelenatete the principal. And took the computer kids on a combo field trip with Sarah's sisters to use a nice new computer lab a few villages over. Posted by Vik at 9:50 PM. These po...

Grazing the Ditches

Randomly sampling wild foods. Visit the Home,. Posted by Sharkbytes (TM). On Monday, July 6, 2015. Milkweed buds ready to harvest (photo by jhy). Note the milky sap oozing from the cut ends (photo by jhy). I just snip them off the plant with scissors. You can see that I've also taken some small leaves, which also taste great. The milky sap oozes out of the cut ends, and it is bitter, but cooking will eliminate that problem. Wash the scissors right away if possible, as that sap is like glue! Sugar or suga...

Cattle Grazing Toulumne County

Cattle Grazing Toulumne County. Monday, November 10, 2008. Your Private property rights are being threatened! As a private property owner, I'm very concerned when cows illegally trespass on my property and cause damage. I’m also concerned by a complete lack of responsibility by the U.S. Forest Service, which repeatedly has shrugged off the problem of cows drifting off national forest lands onto my property – year after year. Private property is an American right and needs to be protected. Your can make a...

Grazing Wedge | University of Missouri Extension

Home and consumer life. The grazing wedge is a tool for managing forage in grazing systems. It visually represents the quantity of forage dry matter available per acre or hectare at a single point in time. When used over time, it calculates pasture growth rates and cumulative forage production in the grazing system. The grazing wedge enables beef and dairy producers to make forage management decisions that align to their production goals. Browse the Public farm reports. Or view the video tutorial below.

The Grazing Wildebeest

A collection of recipes from an ex-vegetarian, new additions at random points in time. Sunday, 26 February 2017. Coconut Chicken Noodle Soup. This is a good dish to make to use up leftover chicken after a roast. This is especially true if you use the bones from a roast to make your own chicken stock for this. 15 litre chicken stock. 6 tbsp coconut milk powder. 1 tsp fish sauce. 4 tbsp lime juice. 2 tsp ground ginger. 2 tsp ground coriander. 1 tsp dried chilli flakes. 1 onion, finely chopped. Serves 3 to 4.
