Saskatchewan homesteader Bessie Raye Thompson Green kept all of her letters, and these were passed down to her grandchildren, who have preserved them. In total there are over 150 handwritten letters – all in their original envelopes. I reviewed, organized and transcribed the letters. Curious handwriting, spelling and punctuation proved a creative challenge!

In 1914, Harold Monks (1892 – 1974) left a job as an accountant in Lancashire and began a new life as a “rancher” near Tofino. After serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the First World War, Harold returned to Tofino where he spent 50 years on the waters of Clayoquot Sound, as a fisherman, life boat crew member and marine gas station operator.
