Thalidomide, past and present. Thalidomide is widely regarded as the worst drug disaster in history for its role in causing thousands of congenital malformations. This post attempts to provide a brief overview of how the tragedy came about and outlines how the same drug has now made a comeback in the treatment of cancer and leprosy. Derer, M. (1998). Image]. ‘Blood Moon’ eclipse like a sunset | blogoftheboffin

https://blogoftheboffin.wordpress.com/2014/10/08/blood-moon-eclipse-like-a-sunset

8216;Blood Moon’ eclipse like a sunset. October 8, 2014. Took this photo myself at Matilda Bay around 7:15pm. Tonight’s red moon or “Blood Moon” is absolutely gorgeous and I hope you had the chance to see it. The red colour of this lunar eclipse is caused by the same physics that makes the sky blue during the day and red sunsets at dusk. During a total lunar eclipse like tonight, the only light that can reach the Moon must have been slightly deflected by the Earth’s atmosphere. And Voilà! The Moon is red!

Hollywood Science: Evolution (2001). August 11, 2014. Disclaimer: I love this film. It was a childhood favourite of mine and upon rewatching it Tuesday night I found so many more things I love, but also a lot of bad science. IMDb: Evolution (2001) 6.0/10. A wannabee firefighter, two community college professors, and a Government research scientist team up to counter an alien form of life that evolves at astonishing pace. For those who enjoy scientific speculation. Did you watch it? Also good. It mean...

NASA’s Picture of the Day 30/07/2014. July 30, 2014. Here is a pretty picture of a lunar transit of our Sun taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on July 26 2014. Isn’t a lunar transit the same as an eclipse? Yes, it would IF the Solar Dynamics Observatory was based on Earth. It’s actually a satellite launched on February 11, 2010 with the mission to determine patterns in solar variability. With catastrophic failure of satellites and electrical grids a likely outcome of a coronal mass ejection.
