Long before the Spanish arrived, the San Fernando Valley had a rich human history. Many different groups of California Indians, including the Fernandeño and Chumash, lived in the Chatsworth area. In an attempt to preserve the local culture of the area, a significant part of the CHS collection is artifacts left behind by the indigenous population.

Many different Indian tribes lived in California, however, Chatsworth and the San Fernando Valley was inhabited by the Fernandeño and Chumash. The people provided sustenance for themselves by hunting, fishing, and gathering nuts and seeds. How did Chatsworth, California, gets its name? Chatsworth is the name of the country estate of England's Duke of Devonshire located in Derbyshire. It is a grand English manor house located in the middle of a lush green "park" of a larger property, shown in the photograph.
