Beverly in Movieland: June 2014
http://beverlygray.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 27, 2014. Michael Jackson, In Memoriam. Has said this is the most complicated, most fascinating case he’s ever encountered. I have no idea who put together the memorial tribute. But it’s highly emotional, and seems the work of a friend or family member, not a business associate. Here are some excerpts:. 8220;The Creator blessed him with never-before-seen musical talent.”. I don’t pretend to know the real truth about Michael Jackson. I don’t understand his mysterious lifestyle...I wish him a ...

Beverly in Movieland: "Camelot" Ushers in the Lusty Month of May
http://beverlygray.blogspot.com/2015/05/camelot-ushers-in-lusty-month-of-may.html
Friday, May 1, 2015. Camelot" Ushers in the Lusty Month of May. Today is May 1, the traditional date for little girls to dance around Maypoles and Soviet workers to parade through the streets. It’s also the start of “The Lusty Month of May.” This is the title of a big production number in Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot. And it’s my cue to talk about the 1967 movie version of the Broadway musical hit. Jack Warner, the last of the great movie moguls, loved Camelot. So intense was Warner’s focus on Camelot.

Beverly in Movieland: Tough Gals and Tuneful Gals: Furiosa Meets Bathsheba Everdene

Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Tough Gals and Tuneful Gals: Furiosa Meets Bathsheba Everdene. Over the weekend, Mad Max: Fury Road. Took in $44.4 million on North American screens. This long-awaited reboot of George Miller’s famous post-apocalyptic franchise has earned big love from critics, and its handling of Charlize Theron’s Furiosa character has sparked spirited conversations about gender issues. The surprise, though, is that Mad Max. I certainly would have put my money on Mad Max. And, especially, Pam Grie...

Beverly in Movieland: “Clouds of Sils Maria”: Cloudy, with a Chance of Cataclysms
http://beverlygray.blogspot.com/2015/05/clouds-of-sils-maria-cloudy-with-chance.html
Tuesday, May 12, 2015. 8220;Clouds of Sils Maria”: Cloudy, with a Chance of Cataclysms. An acclaimed middle-aged actress at the height of her powers. An eager young up-and-comer, full of praise for her inspirational elder. Sound. Like All About Eve? Yes—and emphatically no. That’s part of the appeal of the 2014 French-German-Swiss co-production, Clouds of Sils Maria. At the heart of Cloud of Sils Maria. That’s another question. In Scorsese’s Hugo. In Clouds of Sils Maria. Portraying a youthful actress kn...

The Location Scout: September 2012

A virtual tour of filming locations. Tuesday, September 25, 2012. 2007) was filmed in Rancho Peñasquitos, a community in San Diego, California. The movie was shot for a mere $15,000 over 7 days, entirely in director Oren Peli's own home. He spent a year remodeling the home and preparing it for shooting. The film doesn't offer much of an exterior view of the house, but the location is easily verified by the houses across the street. Location: San Diego, CA. Coordinates: 32.958995, -117.140763. 2010) (whic...

Friday, January 30, 2015. My Lunch with Deborah Nadoolman Landis: Of Costumes and Streetwear. When the Academy Awards are handed out on February 22, the statuette for Best Costume Design will probably go to a film with bravura fantasy elements, like Maleficent. Or Into the Woods. But the very opinionated Deborah Nadoolman Landis suggests that each acting Oscar should be paired with a costume design Oscar. She cites the distinctive look of Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men. As time passed, street cl...
