The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. The guy who stole my iPad. Posted by Stephen Heiner. He hangs out at night on my street with three or four of his friends. They smoke, drink, and talk about nothing, as 25-35 year-olds are wont to do. Whenever I pass him, and we manage to make eye contact, I smile, wave, and cry out,. I call him a thief because last November he stole an iPad out of my bag. He laughed, smiled, and blew me a kiss. The train slid out of the station.

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. OFII checkboxes: two classes done. Posted by Stephen Heiner. In my last post chronicling a visit to OFII. Since getting on the path to citizenship, I attended the two classes which were mandated as part of my immigration classes: “Living and working in France” and “Civic Formation.”. At the end of each class we were given a multiple choice quiz which was graded on completion, not accuracy, and we went over the answers as a class and ...

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. I live in a different Paris than you do…. Adding a podcast →. Why I don’t hate Starbucks in Europe (I actually kinda love it). Posted by Stephen Heiner. Americans take it for granted that they can sit in most coffee shops or Panera-like establishments and work for hours, after buying one token item of food or drink. If the place is busy enough or you don’t plan to be there very long, you don’t even have to buy anything. Sometimes the...

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. Why I don’t hate Starbucks in Europe (I actually kinda love it). The guy who stole my iPad →. Posted by Stephen Heiner. I’ve wanted to do a podcast for a while (you’ll note I recorded the first episode back in October! But a number of (boring) issues prevented its launch until now. The podcast will feature expat (usually American) perspectives on life in Paris. Take a listen. And tell me what you think! Bonne-Nouvelle, Paris, France.

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. Posted by Stephen Heiner. It is quiet. Wonderfully quiet. Not just in Paris but everywhere you go in France. On July 15th, after some national holiday that will go unnamed, the French decide that it’s been a solid 10.5 months of work, and that it’s close enough to 12 to round up and call it a year. They depart in all directions, with a plan to return on or around September 1st. It ostensibly provides more safety via a double-doored s...

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. Doughnuts, networking and other writings. Posted by Stephen Heiner. There is just a little over a week to be involved with a cool new doughnut startup by (no surprise) a fellow American in Paris. Check his story out here. Speaking of startups, I had my first meeting with someone via Shapr. And this one on Medium. I also occasionally answer questions on Quora. Write on business themes on LinkedIn. The pain of loss. The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. Meetup: A great way to build a core of diverse friends. Posted by Stephen Heiner. This summer I went to the Fete de la Musique. With a large group of friends. Though it originally started in France it’s now a worldwide annual event. As the evening closed out at our fourth musical venue out of hundreds we could have chosen, I took a moment to be thankful for a platform that has connected me with so many wonderful people. As a way to f...

The American in Paris. The story of my adventures in the City of Light. Newer posts →. Posted by Stephen Heiner. Some time ago I was sitting with some friends and the conversation turned to banks and bank fees. Both of my friends shared how much they hated “establishment” banks and described with relish how they had recently “fired” them. They had chosen to move on to the “internet only” banks. One banked at Fortuneo. The other recommended Boursorama. But is (to my knowledge) not widespread in the US.
