Liquid Irish: Kalak Vodka
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/07/kalak-vodka.html
Friday, 10 July 2015. Seven parts Kalak vodka. A strip of lemon peel. A stick of cinnamon. A week ago I had yet to taste my first martini. Now I'm ready to elbow James Bond aside at the bar to demand it be made just so. Until recently I had the usual whiskey drinker's prejudice about vodka: that all the flavour had been intentionally distilled out of it. But the recipe above goes light on the vermouth, leaving Kalak to carry the martini. Which it does, easily. Kalak. Is a vodka with substance. It does no...

Liquid Irish: Whiskey Class at the Dingle Whiskey Bar
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/06/whiskey-class-at-dingle-whiskey-bar.html
Wednesday, 3 June 2015. Whiskey Class at the Dingle Whiskey Bar. One of the attractions of whiskey drinking as a lifelong pursuit is the sure knowledge there are always fresh flavours yet to be discovered. But the same infinite variety can be daunting when approaching whiskey for the first time. This week, the theme was the impact of oak. The varying line-up is a good excuse to return week after week. It's an education, painlessly administered. Regardless of the selected theme, Fionnán will explain exact...

Liquid Irish: The Curse of Accessibilty
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/03/the-curse-of-accessibilty.html
Sunday, 15 March 2015. The Curse of Accessibilty. Is Irish whiskey taken seriously? Not according to Mark Reynier, speaking to The Spirits Business. Recently. He's the guy converting a former brewery in Waterford city to a whiskey distillery. 8220;I don't think people take Irish whiskey seriously, because there isn't anything with which to take it seriously. It's easy doing accessible stuff, but there isn't a great deal of mind-fuckery going on; it's all just pretty simplistic stuff.". Like many whiskey ...

Friday, 19 December 2014. Makers and Brothers Select Reserve Glass. If you're anything like me, you'll be thinking about getting around to buying Christmas presents one of these days. Liquid Irish: The Liberties 11 Year Old Single Malt
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/01/the-liberties-11-year-old-single-malt.html
Monday, 19 January 2015. The Liberties 11 Year Old Single Malt. Happy birthday, Dublin Airport! Seeing us off the island and back again. Many airports are endured rather than enjoyed but I always hope for a good hour to squander airside at Dublin. It's a chance to survey the full landscape of Irish whiskey and chat with the sales staff, enthusiasts themselves and keen to offer information and opinions. (They have formed their own whiskey club, based at the airport: the Aviators Whiskey Society. It comes ...

Liquid Irish: Irish Whiskey: The Technical File - Part 1
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/03/irish-whiskey-technical-file-part-1.html
Tuesday, 24 March 2015. Irish Whiskey: The Technical File - Part 1. Until now we've been making do with the Irish Whiskey Act of 1980. To know what is and isn't Irish whiskey. It has the merit of being a quick read but it comes from an era when there was only one distilling company on the whole island and we weren't shifting much of the wet stuff. Not much nit-picking over definitions back then. The EU is useful here. It confers Geographical Indication. Disclaimer: this is my interpretation of the new ru...

Liquid Irish: An Púcán / Teeling Single Cask Single Malt
http://www.liquidirish.com/2015/06/an-pucan-teeling-single-cask-single-malt.html
Wednesday, 10 June 2015. An Púcán / Teeling Single Cask Single Malt. The revival of Irish whiskey is usually quantified as the number of working and planned distilleries. One indicator I'd like to hear is the number of whiskey bars in Ireland, where a "whiskey bar" would have a minimum of, say, 100 whiskeys on the shelf. (And, of course, bar staff who can explain the virtues of each.). Some have already embraced the task. An Púcán. In the centre of Galway city, for example. Photo courtesy of An Púcán.
