Thursday, May 29, 2008. Add On: Guilin Reed Flute Cave. Today the delegation visited Guilin's Reed Flute Cave. The cave is located a few miles North of the city. The name comes from the reeds that grow outside the cave which can be made into flutes. According to our local guide, John, a farmer came across the cave back in the early 60's, but writings inside the cave date back to 792 AD. Now the delegation is in Shanghai before out flight tomorrow back to the United States. Posted by Faculty Advisor.

Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Hangzhou: Laughing Buddha and Lingyin Temple. At their option, 32 scholars decided to take a tour of the Lingyin Temple. This is the largest Buddhist temple in China. It is a very beautiful location. The temple (or more accurately temples) are built into the side of a hill in the Wulin Mountains. Sunday, May 25, 2008. Those scholars on the add-on trip traveled to Guilin today from Shanghai. Guilin is a smaller city in the South of China that is renowned for its scenery. The city is much smaller than our prior stops with only 500,000 inhabitants (compared to the 6.5 million in Hangzhou). Our hotel is on the banks of a beautiful lake. Saturday, May 31, 2008. Back in the U S of A. Yesterday the delegation made its way to the airport. A number of scholars choose to take the Maglev (magnetic levitation train) to the airport. The train speeds to over 430 km/hr (over 267 mph) on its 7 minute 30 second journey. It is the first commercial high-speed maglev line in the world. It went into operation in 2004.
