Others might have different preferences or even better advice, but I think these are some good pointers for beginners. For looking up words I use Denshi Jisho. You can look up words using English, romaji, kana, kanji, kanji by stoke count and radicals, and you can easily copy and paste words and kanji from here into emails, facebook, and into blogs (wink-wink).
