Jen Kirby Portraitist

Self Portrait in Derwent Drawing Pencils on Canson Mi-Teintes paper. I decided that, as a portraitist, I needed a self portrait for my avatar. In the past my self portraits, drawn by using a mirror, had a concentrated glare, or at best an aloof look. A friend even asked me if one portrait was of my mother so it obviously didn't look quite like me! I needed a self portrait with an expression that is typical of the me that my friends would recognise, so here I used a photo that my son took of me.

About Jen Kirby Portraitist

http://www.jenkirby.co.uk/about.html

About Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Miniatures (up to 5 inches). Portraiture fascinates me. Whether I am drawing or painting I strive to express the precious individuality of the subject in every portrait. I like to capture those expressions that are most typical of the individual. I am delighted when a family member says "I know that look". I have been asking myself "Why should anyone want me to do their portraits, rather than another artist? I rarely provide the portrait already framed. People have stron...

Work in Progress: Yawning Tiger

http://jenkirbyartblog.blogspot.com/2016/07/yawning-tiger.html

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Sunday, 17 July 2016. I finished two pen and ink drawings this last week despite being distracted by a missing cat. My very old cat got out when I wasn't paying attention properly. Perhaps I did the drawing so efficiently as a distraction to keep from worrying about the cat. He got home on Friday night but he had to be rescued from a high wall in the dark. Posted by Jen Kirby.

Work in Progress: King Charles Spaniel

http://jenkirbyartblog.blogspot.com/2016/08/king-charles-spaniel.html

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Friday, 5 August 2016. It is many years since I last did a portrait in pastel. But pastels have always been my favourite medium. I had to stop working in pastels because I had trouble with my hand and I kept dropping them. Dropping pastels is very bad for them and you end up with a colourful floor and pastel crumbs too small to hold. I wish that I had had longer to work on the portr...

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Saturday, 27 February 2016. I have finished the wolf den in pen and ink but I have not had time to scan it. I have been finishing a piece of furniture that I built, and tools and other things are still sitting on top of the scanner. The furniture was built to hold a Nichiren Buddhist mandala called a Gohonzon. The gold leaf only sticks to the sized area. It doesn't stick to the ...

Work in Progress: November 2015

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Monday, 16 November 2015. Portrait of Sheila's Eye. I did this Conté of a mare's eye on Canson Mi Teintes paper for my own pleasure. Although one thinks of Conté as being a drawing medium, I think of myself as painting with it. Appreciate comments from anyone with knowledge of horses to tell me where I have made errors. Posted by Jen Kirby. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Wednesday, 7 October 2015. I have been working hard daily on a portrait commission for a few weeks now. But in the evenings I have been doing miniatures on the theme of the horsechestnut tree. You will rarely see me without a pen or a pencil near to hand. Posted by Jen Kirby. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

I have been updating my website. I made my last website on a computer that died and I hadn't backed up the files. So I had to start again. And this time I have made it responsive down to mobile size. I hope it works. It is the same url of course. Http:/ www.jenkirby.co.uk. I would love to know what people think about the new colours.

Work in Progress: The Bronze Cat finished

http://jenkirbyartblog.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-bronze-cat-finished.html

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Sunday, 3 July 2016. The Bronze Cat finished. The Bronze Cat finished. I finished the painting of the bronze cat at last. I am pleased with how well I succeeded with the tiger's eye on the left using glazes. The Connemara marble is satisfactorily chunky using a pointillist technique in shades of grey over a green glaze. I don't know what the other crystals are. Posted by Jen Kirby.

Work in Progress: April 2016

http://jenkirbyartblog.blogspot.com/2016_04_01_archive.html

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Friday, 1 April 2016. I have been making a few changes to my studio space. The changes became necessary when the rescued cat recovered and became more active and demanding of my attention. He soon learned that the certain way to my attention was to sit on my painting. The only solution was to find a table to take upstairs to hold my drawing slope. Posted by Jen Kirby.

Work in Progress

Updates on the art I am currently working on, with some information about techniques and materials. Jen Kirby, Portraitist. Sunday, 23 October 2016. I would have liked a bit more warning about the craft fair, and having set to work on doing a couple of paintings for it, obstacles arose. Don't they always! I set up a folding canvas with samples of my portraits on repositionable posters, and added some colourful small drawings, flyers, business bookmarks and cards. One of the most enjoyable things about ta...

This is the cutest room ever! It was on my new favorite show, Secrets from a stylist on HGTV. I'm really needing this right about now. Junie is such a good baby. we love her so much and her big brother and sister are OBSESSED with her. We all slept at my moms Christmas Eve. Aunt Maddie and the kids waiting to see what Santa brought. Cali mostly got everything PRINCESS. Aunt Sue and Bill in there Ute Snuggie I gave them. Cole was overwhelmed. He mostly got everything Toy Story. Presents from Papa Kim.
