We are a group of people collectively called The Volunteer Rangers. The group was formed several years ago by the Park Rangers to do environmental and conservation work in the Dene. We are from different backgrounds, are different ages, and have different dispositions; but, we work as a team in rain or shine to look after some of the green spaces around our city.

Jesmond Dene - The Grotto 2008. Series of images showing volunteer work. Around "The Grotto". In the past Lady Armstrong was said to have liked the effect 'The Grotto' had on unsuspecting guests. It has a different character to other parts of the Dene - being a bit mysterious and moody - almost gothic.

The Old Mill Project. The Volunteer Ranger Group was formed several years ago by the Park Rangers to do environmental and conservation work in the Dene. Discussions on improving the Old Mill began in Spring 2004 and a grant application made to the Local Heritage Initiative (LHI) with a separate application to English Heritage for permission to make changes to the building. The applications took hundreds of hours of work to prepare and gain approval but in September 2005 an LHI grant was awarded.
