40pluscareerguru: The heresy of telling new entrepreneurs they are wrong
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-heresy-of-telling-new-entrepreneurs.html
The heresy of telling new entrepreneurs they are wrong. I know a lot of people who are starting businesses these days. It’s partly because of what I do and partly because my networking means I inevitably meet a lot of them. And I enjoy it. I get genuinely excited hearing about people’s plans and ideas and I love helping them improve and refine them. But there’s something which troubles me. It’s the idea that anyone. Can become an entrepreneur and anyone. People lap this up. It’s become a busine...Yes com...

40pluscareerguru: Some people really do deserve to be fired
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2016/12/some-people-really-do-deserve-to-be.html
Some people really do deserve to be fired. Sometimes I wonder what people were thinking when writing online content. Perhaps the simple answer is, not much at all. Tonight I was researching Hugo Boss and stumbled across a blog for a cologne website. It’s so tragically brilliant, I couldn’t resist sharing a small piece of it here. Hey there and thanks for visiting Cologne Boutique blog! A man’s scent of choice should smell like his personality. Nothing is easy for a bloke like me. I am seriously inept...

40pluscareerguru: The one job sector that's booming
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-one-job-sector-thats-booming.html
The one job sector that's booming. The fastest growing sector isn't tech, it's the black economy. The other day, I met an old friend I’d not seen for years. Decades in fact. He’s a talented graphic designer. Naturally we talked about how his career had played out. It turned out that he’d drifted from job to job, but due to health problems had never managed to hold a job down for any great length of time. That's maybe 10 million jobs in the US since the start of the recession. As a benchmark, one of the f...

40pluscareerguru: Employers and recruiters take note - these are the myths about mature workers
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2013/04/employers-and-recruiters-take-note.html
Employers and recruiters take note - these are the myths about mature workers. Peter Spunt, an ex-senior executive in the pharmaceutical industry, has had his share of job search challenges with what human resources experts refer to as “ageism” - or age discrimination. Myth No. 1: Expect to pay more. This is by far the most pervasive. Larry Riley, director at job assistance program Executives Available, specializing in job-search strategies and support for professionals 40 years of age and over, says...

40pluscareerguru: October 2016

Just how much disruption is good for us? There's a lot of fog in Uber world. There has ensued a great deal of jubilation from other Uber drivers, trade unions and the political left. Personally I am also pleased at this ruling. But not because I am opposed to disruptive businesses per se. We need innovation in business, but this needs to be balanced with legal and statutory interventions which curb the tendency of new business models to become exploitative long before regulation catches up with them.

40pluscareerguru: November 2016
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
How to alienate 99% of the people you want to like you online. I have never written a knee-jerk post about anything. Ever. But this post is going to break that mould. No research. No references. No editing. So forgive me if this isn't the most elegantly written post from me you have ever read. But critically, you can read it without any interference or demands from me at all. That's good I think. This is a very simple message. For anyone who has a website:. Duh Sure you know that right? Just now I saw a ...

40pluscareerguru: The value of being an outsider
http://40pluscareerguru.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-value-of-being-outsider.html
The value of being an outsider. The desire to conform to the expectations of a group is a primal urge for most people. Tribalism is underpinned by conforming to group norms. So being different sets us at a disadvantage – or an advantage if we choose to make it one. This week I was delighted to be quoted by Marc Miller. You can see Marc’s post here:. I am the odd man out for at least three reasons:. I am a Brit not an American. I am not a careers coach, HR person, or recruiter. But here’s the thing&...
