John's Morning Bike Ride. Sunday, October 10, 2010. Result, I used up all the propane before the water boiled - it did nearly boil - so I go the cup of tea. The stove needs a small windscreen if it is to work properly. Partial success with the plan. Here, then, is the Greater Manchester round-up, with the birds seen in June. A Red Kite flew over Woodford Aerodrome (4th). The male Black Redstart was still in Manchester city centre all month. A Marsh Harrier was at Bryn Marsh, Wigan (12th-13th). A Quail was flushed from an Offerton garden (17th). A drake Wigeon lingered at Shell Pool late month (23rd-30th).

At Sea Walls I watched a youngster in a bright red helmet abseiling down the well used vertical face near to the Gully; well supervised by experienced climbers, but nevertheless a brave young lady! Perhaps this is not the rarest of moths but it's not exactly common and when I had one in the garden moth trap 9 years ago. It caused enough interest for a couple of people to come and take a look. So it was a bit of a surprise when this was spotted on the roof of a tent at a big family camping do at Salhouse on the Norfolk Broads. Bedstraw Hawkmoth Hyles gallii. Canon Powershot SX50 HS.
