Travel. Gardening. Food. As the season turns and temperatures drop, there’s a need to stoke your inner fire to weather the winter to come. Beginning to incorporate more fire into your movements helps overcome a seasonal. Practicing through the passage of time. When I was young, my birthday parties were amazing. Travel. Gardening. Food. Made in York County: A factory-tour mecca. In York County, Pa. they make stuff: pretzels and pottery, motorcycles and milk, wallpaper and wine. When you bill yourself as The Factory Tour Capital of the World, you’ve got to deliver. And York County does in grand style this month with its Made in America event from June 20-23, where 17 factories open their floors to allow visitors to see the inner workings, in many cases, for free. Changing your perspective | Daina Savage

Travel. Gardening. Food. Crow on the rowboat. The first time a yoga teacher suggested I press my hands on the floor and lift up into a handstand, I thought she was joking. Until all around me, the whole class was turning upside-down. Clearly I was in the wrong place. So at 44, I couldn’t imagine that my yoga teacher couldn’t just accept this fact: I am just not an upside-down person. Plus, with each passing year, I feel a little more breakable. And that’s the rub: being willing to fly with faith, being w...

Travel. Gardening. Food. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few. Zen Master Shunryo Suzuki. In yoga, we work to cultivate a beginner’s mind. Each day, when we sit to meditate or when we unroll our mats, the intention is to begin this practice again fresh and unencumbered. That intent may be difficult many days. Okay, for me, most days. The past always informs the present. And unfortunately, it’s also what limits us. Click here to cancel reply. Newer article...

Travel. Gardening. Food. In yoga classes, we talk about heart-opening poses. Physically, it’s a way to open up chests that become collapsed in our modern society as we hunch over our computers, our cell phones, even our meals at the dinner table. In the wintertime, this posture is even more prevalent as we huddle against the cold, protecting our essential warmth. But it is this collapsed posture that also closes us off from each other, often creating the emotional winter blues as we shut down and withdraw.

Travel. Gardening. Food. Splendor of the trees. It’s the season for trees. Now, when they begin to shed their summer cloaks of green, revealing the shimmer of crimson and saffron underneath, they become the jewels of our landscape. Rapt as we are, we head out to buy these statuesque features, perhaps unaware that unlike an impulse flat of annuals, trees deserve a more measured, considered approach. People get busy and don’t realize what their trees are doing, he says. I had a lady last week who got trees...

Cultivating presence | Daina Savage

Travel. Gardening. Food. I freely admit it, I stink at meditation. Sitting down on the floor with my legs crossed, attempting to achieve some state of inner peace usually means my feet fall asleep, my mind wanders off to my day’s to-do list, and I keep opening my eyes to check to see if I can be done yet. Looking to develop your own meditative practice, or simply become more mindful of how you live your life? Evolution Power Yoga’s most popular program – 40 Days to a Personal Revolution – beg...
