Discovering the rebel Emirate. What’s it all about? Mummy’s favourite hotel: Waldorf Astoria RAK. July 22, 2015. When its 45 degrees, yes dear you do need your shoes… a trip to Dhaya Fort. Built in the 16. A trip to Dhaya Fort does not take long, there is not much to see but the experience is great. As one of only a few remaining historical landmarks in the UAE, a visit is truly magical, but take my advice, do not go at midday, do not go in the middle of July and only travel with children who wear sh...
The Palace of the Queen of Sheba: the oldest palace in the UAE – lizzietheexplorer

Discovering the rebel Emirate. What’s it all about? The Palace of the Queen of Sheba: the oldest palace in the UAE. Ok, I’m lying it is not the palace of the Queen of Sheba, nor is it the palace of the Queen Zenobia that is widely reported, but it is a palace and it is believed to be the oldest in the UAE. But possibly 500 years old, built during a Portuguese invasion and not the 3000 years old that the tales tell. Every person you speak to will give a different tale of the palace origins, some claim tha...

Mom, Daniel and Tasco. October 30, 2016. It is early Sunday morning and we have had a super busy weekend spending both evenings with our amazing friends who we have made while living in Dubai. It is not uncommon for us to have droves of people in and out our house during weekends but the scary thought, for Julian and I, is that it may be one of the last times that we gather together like this at our home in Dubai. There is a wonderful saying from Winnie the Pooh, “How lucky I am to have something t...

Mom, Daniel and Tasco. Lamb chops in the desert. May 17, 2015. The summer months in Dubai can easily be described as hell on earth because the temperatures soar to the high forties and sometimes low fifty degrees Celsius and it becomes the time of the year where families either leave the country or become hermits because being outside is just impossible. But it is worth taking the risk because the story and the memories that you make will outweigh the moments of having to push your car out the sand.

Mom, Daniel and Tasco. October 1, 2015. Last night after a bit of an argument about getting into the bath, I went to fetch Daniel’s PJs and he called me to the bathroom, looked straight up at me and said, “Mommy, I am very happy”, those five little words totally floored me and made me realize, I guess I am doing something right! Mom, Daniel and Tasco. What happens when the food runs out? January 21, 2016. January 21, 2016. Ok, it is not so great if you are actually earning rands but for the expats it was, as they say, like Christmas. In times of food shortages, the cost of food will spike, crime becomes uncontrollable and the safety of citizens is not guaranteed. So my question is this, can South Africa handle a more violent environment than it already is struggling to deal with? For once, Im not actually convinced that it can.

Life With Limits
April 7, 2012, 1:20 am. I searched the corners of my mind today for someone. Someone took care of me. Let me fall frequently. Watched me make monkey moves. Just to circle around to the same familiar spot. Someone created feeling in me. Let my rage devour itself into a ball of creamsicle sandwich. Someone gave me an answer. Picked up the crumpled balls of snot tissue. Lying on the bathroom floor. In the dark someone picked my pieces up. I looked for someone today. And all I was left with was a knotted.

Discovering the rebel Emirate. What’s it all about? There is good in this world and then there is bad, there is joy and there is hope but then sadly there is heartache and despair. The UAE has recently experienced the latter; 45 soldiers have fallen in combat and it is now the responsibility of the country, it’s people and it’s residents to ensure their lives were not sacrificed in vain. Lizzie the Lazy Student Cook. The Art of Simple Cooking. Rhubarb crumble with coconut and almonds. June 23, 2015. I consider rhubarb the wronged child in the fruit family. Announcing my crumble making plans to my housemate, he frowned, ‘Rhubarb, really? 8217; then started fantasising out loud about alternative crumble contenders. ‘Raspberries… blueberries? He says he still prefers apple crumble. I don’t believe him. 400 g rhubarb, trimmed and cut into 1 cm cubes. 100-200 g sugar, to taste. 1 Preheat oven...
