About the Lowell Mill Women. On a rainy June day in 1843, the Transcendentalist philosopher Bronson Alcott and his wife and several children made their way in a creaking wagon up Prospect Hill in Harvard, Massachusetts, to a worn red farmhouse that Alcott christened "Fruitlands." This name reflected Alcott's hope that he, his family, and a few acolytes could live off the land while he occupied himself mainly with Transcendentalist thinking. Harriet Ellen O'Brien. About the Lowell Mill Women. The cotton manufacturers, the "Lords of the Loom," believed that whatever their personal opinion about slavery, if it were abolished, their new manufacturing industry would collapse. Without slavery, they thought, their supply of raw cotton would diminish because whites would not work the fields, not even if they, unlike the slaves, were paid. So abolitionism was frowned upon in Lowell and other Northern textile centers. Richard O. Boyer. The Legend of John Brown.

About the Lowell Mill Women. She shivered and came to. The room was very cold. She was alarmed to see how low the candle had burned: had she slept so long? She reached out and put her small work-worn hand on her father's. He was colder than she. She came out of her chair, stiff and awkward, and felt for his heart. Nothing: Death had come and gone. Now she was alone in the world. She picked up her trunk and began to walk again.

Writing historical fiction presents its own unique delights and difficulties. The delights, for those who love history, are obvious. You get to immerse yourself in a particular time period of the past- or many different ones, if you are prolific. Of course you could avoid the whole problem of understanding the condition of women in the past by writing your historical novel with an all-male cast, but that would be pretty dull, wouldn’t it? Q How much research should I do for my historical novel? Q I've sp...

Stay, on the other hand–stay and seek her out- I weakened. I surrendered myself once again to that obsession which had held me tight in its grip since the moment I had heard of the existence of those fragments of the poet’s heart. I rose from my seat, brushed the soot from my coat, and stepped out into the bitter cold, the dripping mist of the waning afternoon. To have seen him! Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown. These facts few psychologists will dispute, and this admitted truth must establish for all time the genuineness and dignity of the weirdly horrible tale as a literary form. It was then brought to glorious and everlasting life by Arthur Conan Doyle and, to a lesser extent, Agatha Christie. The Chevalier C. Auguste Dupin, Poe s brilliant amateur, set...
