Thursday, 17 January 2013. Why don't we grit every road? Luton has approximately 300 miles of roads, so it would be too expensive and unrealistic to treat every one. So although most minor roads will not be treated, it is worth noting that over half of Luton's roads are salted when conditions require. Thursday, 17 January 2013. How do we decide when to grit? We use information from the Meteorological Office and the Icelert computer system to help us decide when to grit. We salt roads when road temperatures are expected to drop below 0C and when roads are expected to be damp - ice will not form on a dry road surface in a dry atmosphere. We aim to salt after the evening rush hour or before the morning rush hour, but weather conditions may mean we have to salt at any time. View my complete profile.
