Rev Bellas opened a church day school in a one storey cottage in Market Place but later removed to a house where the Swan Inn now stands. With his son, Richard, the school continued until his death in 1815. The Church School. Back Lane, was built in 1829 for 134 children with a staff of two. It was financed by public subscription and a 100 pounds grant from the National Society. The first headmaster is not known. The second was Thomas Lawford who took over in 1834. Major Ivan Hirst was born in Saddleworth in 1916 to a family who owned an Olham business making clocks, watches and optical components. He is credited as being almost single-handedly responsible for the revival of Volkswagen after the end of World War Two. A prototype Beetle was found among the debris and Hirst had it painted green and sent to the Army HQ in Bielefield who quickly responded with an order for 20,000 cars. The factory went into production and, by March 1946, had produced its 1000th car.

Hilton Wrigley built racing bicycle frames in Marsden during the 1950s and 60s. Hilton worked for Brooks Motors as an engineering draughtman and his hobby, which took up most of his spare time, was building racing bicycle frames. His first workshop was on New Delight, next to the railway station, in Marsden. It is thought that at one time Hilton had a proper shop in addition, at Fall Bottom, near the steps which lead down from Manchester Road to Oliver Lane. Hilton passed away in 1977.
