Sambo Talk...: Four Year Old Black Belt - disgusting!
http://martialnews-onsambo.blogspot.com/2011/08/four-year-old-black-belt-disgusting.html
Thursday, 11 August 2011. Four Year Old Black Belt - disgusting! Yes, it was reported in a national newspaper that a four-year-old was graded to Black Belt at age four after starting Taekwondo at the age of two-and-a-half. Now a Black belt is a level of competence issued by an organisation and yes different organisations have different criteria, so you can have black belts of different standards. This in its self was quite a good idea but note the age. Judo, out of all the martial arts, seems to have...
Sambo Talk...: October 2012
http://martialnews-onsambo.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 16 October 2012. In the early 1980’s I became very interested in creating the Ultimate Martial Arts Competition system. My reasoning was that if I put together a lot of Martial Arts I would create something unique and the name I came up with for this was Shiai Jutsu meaning the Competitive Art. While I was starting this all up I came across Jiu Jitsu Master Trevor Roberts 8. So what of the future? For more information on Sambo visit: http:/ www.britishsombo.co.uk. Links to this post. Friday, 1 March 2013. It seems that those participating in Martial Arts/Combat Sports no longer have the courage to enter competitions and test their skills; I was very disappointed that many clubs and organisations I have supported in the past did not want to support this event and me especially. Can I wish him the best of luck he will need it. For more information on Sambo visit: http:/ www.britishsombo.co.uk/ Contact Martin Clarke at sombogb@blueyonder.co.uk. Links to this post. I don't think so.
Sambo Talk...: June 2013
http://martialnews-onsambo.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, 6 June 2013. FIAS History of Sambo from 1985. So I have decided to look to the past as sometimes History can help the future. In 1985 Fernando Compte brought together many countries interested in Sambo and on May 16. So why the name change? On a final point is Sambo originally a Russian Combat System or is it a product of the old USSR? If it is the latter all the old Soviet Republics can claim to be founders? FIAS Service Gold medal. FIAS Special award for service to International Sambo. How So...

Wednesday, 15 August 2012. The Olympics is over. Team UK medal haul will inspire youngster and get them away from thinking they can become famous by going to rubbish like X Factor. Our Athletes have shown by hard work you can achieve not by winning a sub standard talent show. Cameron has said he wants to encourage more sport in school so we can have more Olympic Champions; what concerns me will all government subsidised sport be just the Olympic Sports? Russian Martial Arts: June 2012
http://martialnews-russianmartialarts.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Friday, 29 June 2012. I am happy to say I was invited here to write a blog; it is an honour for me to write my thoughts and for you sportsmen and women to read them. First I will run through things I have trained in, some to lesser or greater extent. I should add I have been active for 38 years, I am now aged 46. I began in a type of karate/kung fu called Kong Chang in the 70’s. I then trained in Japanese ju-jitsu and kick boxing. Before I knew where I was I found myself in Russia training and competing&...

Street Edge: Realistic training & some tips!
http://martialnews-streetedge.blogspot.com/2011/12/realistic-training-some-tips.html
Tuesday, 20 December 2011. Realistic training and some tips! Getting back to the point, most martial arts systems teach how to defend against attacks, usually in the manner of “the attacker grabs you, you do this defence”, “when the attacker punches, you do this”. Now if we relate this to a sandwich all we are getting here is the filling. Remember we are trying to control the whole situation, not just the physical attack. Your physical response. How have you controlled your attacker? If you have used an ...

Core Reality: The Basics of Verbal De-escalation
http://martialnews-corereality.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-basics-of-verbal-de-escalation.html
Saturday, 1 September 2012. The Basics of Verbal De-escalation. Then I notice a third party come into that conversation and get a little too close to NFN1. His head is moving like a woodpecker or some kind of hen pecking at something and he looked at NFN1 and said," You pulled a gun on his dad? A teacher disciplining a student;. A parent with a problem child;. A stewardess with an angry passenger;. A manager with a disgruntled employee. To me this is always better than physical force. Physical force ...

Reality Bites: August 2011
http://martialnews-realitybites.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, 14 August 2011. From Nothing to Something. Ivory towers and soap boxes, the two worst problems in my opinion in the martial arts world today; or to put it another way: politics. Respect also seems to be another value that’s missing lately, not just from the martial arts but from all areas of society and what is even worse than this is those that demand respect, they seem to forget respect has to be earned. Of course it could be that I’ve been having a lot of bad experiences lately. In modern time...

Reality Check: Just how realistic and fit for purpose is your self-protection training?
http://martialnews-realitycheck.blogspot.com/2011/11/just-how-realistic-and-fit-for-purpose.html
Monday, 14 November 2011. Just how realistic and fit for purpose is your self-protection training? The thing is, I'm fully aware that these are indeed nothing more than harmless daydreams, we can all choose to have them at times; it's nothing more than harmless escapism. The problem begins when people choose to have these hugely delusional thoughts in areas of their daily life that really should be approached with reasonable rationality and a basic cognitive thought process. A few months ago I had the pl...

Tuesday, 15 March 2011. The Virtues of Bushido. As an instructor whom trains with the Japanese katana I have often been asked my thoughts on the code of bushido. Whilst I have great interest in all things Japanese especially feudal fighting techniques I make no claim to fully understand the spiritual development of the fighting men of Japan. After all I am not Japanese and I am certainly not a samurai. The general feeling is one of friendship and the pursuit of correct knowledge. People, but from yourself.

Kobudo Korner: Doki Doki Festival, Manchester 2011
http://martialnews-kobudokorner.blogspot.com/2011/12/doki-doki-festival-manchester-2011.html
Tuesday, 20 December 2011. Doki Doki Festival, Manchester 2011. Guest post by John David. After receiving a welcoming invite to attend and demonstrate at the Manchester Japanese Doki Doki Festival, martial artists from the Bukido Dojo and other martial arts dojos were about to embark upon something that is different from a traditional demonstration. Now captivated, onlookers were treated to displays between students from the Shōsha dojo and Bukido dojo, in which the bo, hanbo, naginata, katana, tanto, nu...

Friday, 4 May 2012. The Foundation and Structure of Learning. This is something that is all too common that we will revisit later in the article. For those that haven't read my other articles I've been involved in martial arts since I was 4 years old back in 1977. For the last several years I've developed programs for Law Enforcement here in the United States. This gave me a greatly different perspective as a teacher and really changed the way I look at curriculums and structure. People retain things bet...

Kobudo Korner: Fundraising for an old Master
http://martialnews-kobudokorner.blogspot.com/2011/11/fundraising-for-old-master.html
Tuesday, 15 November 2011. Fundraising for an old Master. Cheque presentation to Aspergillus Centre. October is a busy month for me, and my family. Not because of Halloween or the build up to Bonfire Night and Christmas; it’s a month when we fund-raise for my late father’s charity: The National Aspergillus Centre in Wythenshawe, Manchester. October, I made people aware of my intentions and everyone was supportive. Before my father died he was studying at the Open University and unfortunately never found ...

Kobudo Korner
Saturday, 1 September 2012. The sound of koto. Fuyuki Enokido with the koto. Being a martial artist I not only practice the arts but include some of Japan’s values in my life. I’m not the type of person who can turn up for class, train and forget about it all till next week. I find the culture and history fascinating even if it’s to just get an insight into how people used to live their lives during the times of war and peace. We were made aware that Fuyuki had played in over 30 countries and had just be...

Reality Bites
Tuesday, 30 October 2012. Ancient arts, modern world – are they fit for purpose? This blog no doubt will upset the. Traditional practitioners but the content of the blog does have a serious point to it and that point is do old bugei martial arts systems have real practical use in a modern world? Now I am not condoning violence as something to be proud of or that these techniques are an answer to all threats of violence; believe me, I have been on the receiving end of a good kicking so nobody is infallible.

Reality Check
Saturday, 2 June 2012. As in, the CORRECT tool for the available target. I was speaking to my good friend Jason J-Bone Simpson yesterday and as ever we got on to the subject of MMA/Combatives/self protection etc. And a topic/question came up along the lines of, why use an open hand instead of a punch? Not word for word but along those lines as I recall from memory; surely using a palm heel would make sense here? All manner of reasoning starts to come forward as to why they would use a fist, they want to ...

Russian Martial Arts
Monday, 20 May 2013. The fight for my life. To start I must apologise for my long, long absence. I will tell you the story and how it relates to my beloved Russian All-Round Fighting…. It got to 31st December with no lessoning of the pain, so an operation was decided upon and overnight a six hour operation freed all the adhesions. That evening, and I will spare the details in full, after I strained my stomach to vomit a 40cm scar sealed with staples burst open, with contents bursting out! Shortly after, ...
