I finished the Appalachian Trail! If you’ve read any of my blog posts in the last year you’ll know I planned to hike all 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. If you read my last post you’ll even know I made it about a third of the way before going silent. Well I’m happy to say that at about lunchtime on 29th September 2016 I reached Katahdin’s summit. Days 59 to 67: Damascus to Pearisburg. Day 59: Camp just before Dickey Gap. Due to complete laziness and lack of organisation over the last couple of days it was about 3:30 by the time I left town. In that time I’d managed to fit in a calzone for lunch, a trip to the supermarket and failed miserably to buy new shoes from three different outfitters (they didn’t fit). Day 60: Partnership Shelter. Hiya, I’m Martin Steel and up until recently I lived and worked in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, that’s in the UK for those of you reading from distant shores. I’ve lived around Manchester since I started my degree at UMIST in late 2000, and have only just found a reason to leave. From a professional point of view I’m a .NET Developer and System Administrator, and for 11 and a bit years up to March 2016 I worked at Mediaburst. Where I spent my day writing Clockwork. Since then I’ve quit my job.

Day 45 to 58: Erwin to Damascus. Day 45: Campsite by Beauty Spot. As usual when leaving town a slightly late start, first waffles at Huddle House, then hiding from storms for an hour or so before I headed off up the hill with Older Dog. After a few steep miles where the path resembled s stream in places we stopped at the first shelter for lunch and to let our shoes dry out. The rest of the day was uphill too ending at Beauty Spot a large grassy clearing in the summit of a hill. Day 46: Clyde Smith Shelter.

Days 32 to 38: Gatlinburg to Hot Springs. Day 32: Icewater Spring Shelter. A very short day of hiking at just 3 miles but it was all uphill and pretty hot. A downside of being in the Smokies is that you can only camp at official shelters so you end up having to pick milage based on their locations. Day 33: Tri-Corner Knob Shelter.
