Melissa's Ink and Mixed Media Techniques: Nature Trail
http://melissasink.blogspot.com/2009/09/nature-trail.html
Melissa's Ink and Mixed Media Techniques. Click on each image to enlarge. Sunday, September 20, 2009. This is one of a three piece self-portrait series. In the fall of 2008, I switched to Rotring pens so this piece was done with these pens. It was completed on a 22" by 30" of Swathmore acid-free drawing paper. After the image was transferred, it was then outlined faintly with F lead. However, these lines were used only as reference. As can be seen in the close-up to the right, the images in the final dra...

Melissa's Studio Techniques: October 2009
http://melissastudio.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 12, 2009. My father was an A.W.S. watercolorist. I remember him soaking his paper, then using paper tape to stretch it across a board. He finally got to paint once the paper was completely dry. I was amazed in my first class with Eleanor Cox. I have begun to use it for virtually everything. I watercolor or paint with pastels or use gouache on it. I usually staple the paper to it as this allows a person to work to the edge. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Melissa's Art Main Page.

Melissa's Studio Techniques: January 2011
http://melissastudio.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 13, 2011. John Singer Sargent used dark green backgrounds in several of his paintings to great affect. An example would be "Lily, Lily, Rose". One way to create a wonderful dark green is. To add black to a mid-value green. Instead, adding red creates a much richer dark green. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Melissa's Art Main Page. Melissa's Ink and Mixed Media Techniques: September 2009
http://melissasink.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Melissa's Ink and Mixed Media Techniques. Click on each image to enlarge. Saturday, September 26, 2009. I began to create watercolor and ink paintings in the 1980s. They sold so successfully that I do not own any from that time period. Combining the paint with ink gives me a freedom from wanting to create detail with watercolor, thus making my watercolor better than straight watercolor. I also like the "graphic" quality that the ink gives to watercolors. It is often recommended to not use multiple ink te...

Melissa's Artist Statements: Variety of Expression
http://melissaholly31.blogspot.com/2009/08/i-use-variety-of-styles-in-my-work.html
Friday, August 21, 2009. I use a variety of styles in my work because I do not feel that a single style can communicate everything. When viewing a scene, I ask myself, "What do I find fascinating in this scene; what is it that makes me want to create art from this scene? My ideas are too varied to communicate completely through a single artist's statement. View my art and determine for yourself what each piece communicates to you as a viewer. Enjoy. Melissa Holly, Artist. Photosynthesis 1 - - Detail. Science Museum of Virginia. Monday, June 23, 2014. As never seen in the world of art before, my "Beauty of Math and Science" series integrates math and science concepts directly into my paintings. As both an artist and scientist, when I view the beauty of the world around us, I also see the math and sicence embedded in these scenes. Text, formulas and scientific concepts are integrated into the paintings same as they are in the world around us.
