Desperate Measures - 19th Century Working Women. The Seamstress - A Song of the Shirt. By: Anna Elizabeth Blundon - dated 1854. Lower-middle-class girls in the middle of the century. Generally gravitated towards dressmaking. Apprenticeship ususally started at the age of fourteen and worked for two years prior to being considered experts in their trade. These young women paid for their apprenticeship and received no wage, although their board and food was covered under the cost of the apprenticeship.

Desperate Measures - 19th Century Working Women. A group of domestic workers in their workplace. A life of service. In 1851 40 percent of working women were in domestic service. This was the most common workplace for women pre-industrialization. The work was hard and the days were long. Servants usually began their day at 5:30 and went to bed with the owners. Factory work was looked down on as the lowest occupation, next to prostition. In fact, many factory workers were considered prostitutes - they were the only working women who had some freedom outside of their workplace.
