Microbial Sciences Building | University of Wisconsin-Madison
Research advances by scientists here at the Microbial Sciences Building will enable biotechnologists to develop drugs with a high degree of specificity, new antibiotics and vaccines, specialty chemicals, and natural products such as flavorings. Work with genetically engineered microbes is enabling the conversion of sunlight and waste materials into useful products like hydrogen or biodegradable plastics, to inactivate environmental toxins, and to reduce the level of greenhouse gases in the environment.

MICROBIAL SCREENING TECHNOLOGIES
Access to large and chemically diverse new molecule libraries is critical to drug discovery. In the last 50 years, over half of the major breakthroughs in the pharmaceutical industry have been natural products. Today, 60% of chemotherapeutics entering late stage clinical trials are of microbial origin. As a by-product of our discovery effort we have isolated many rare microbial metabolites, which represent a diverse range of chemical structures and biological activities. BioAustralis.

Microbiology Basics and Beyond...
Microbiology Basics and Beyond. Monday, October 13, 2008. Magnetotactic Bacteria - The Living Magnets. Some bacteria are found to have magnetic property inside them and they are called magnetotactic bacteria. Was first found in pond water by microbiologist R.P. Blakemore in 1975. The bacteria is able to use Earth’s magnetic field to orient itself. This is accomplished using special organelles called magnetosomes. Magnetotactic bacteria are found living in mud and brackish water. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
