Musings of a medieval gamesmith. Wilhelm’s Collapsible Spring Pole Lathe. October 27, 2013. I made a collapsible spring pole lathe last year. This was more than just a project for a Society for Creative Anachronism. To build a spring pole lathe? It is lightweight and portable. I can collapse it down into about a 2-sq ft footprint in my garage, so my wife’s car still fits in the garage and I don’t have to sleep on the couch. It breaks down small enough to fit it into my friend’s Prius, along with al...

Musings of a medieval gamesmith. Gokstad ship game board fragment. May 29, 2015. A clinker built ship, measuring 23.8 m long and 5.1 m wide, was discovered in a burial mound at the Gokstad farm near Sandefjord in southern Norway in 1880. Dendrochronological analysis. I must analyze this further in another post. My overall impression is that this board was made of a quality befitting a petty king of 9th century Norway. Musings of a medieval gamesmith. Carved wooden hobby horses. September 24, 2014. At a recent SCA. Event, called Battlemoor. I had an opportunity to create a unique gift for the Royal Princesses of the Outlands. And I was inspired by a certain period illustration of a child playing on a hobby horse. Children playing with a ball, a hobby horse and a scopperel, from a book of heraldry (c. 1484-1486) ÖNB 12820, fol. 182r. Carving the transferred design with an assortment of hand chisels.
