Here are some thoughts on using Open Court as a tool and not the toolbox. Open Court has good reading comprehension strategies as an integral part of its curriculum, but teachers need to be trained in understanding and using these strategies, and need to accept and believe in these strategies, before they can successfully implement them. Decide your current writing program sucks eggs (or is incredibly imbalanced in terms of amount of time you have to put into it versus what you and your students get out of it.). Decide you want to give your students enough instruction, time and feedback to become wonderful, powerful and successful writers.
